Imo, sports teams are just like private 'retail' stores.

[/ QUOTE ] why do you say that?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because they, as a private business, are marketing and selling a product.

b

[/ QUOTE ]so basically every company is a retail store then.

Almost every owner who bitches about operating at a lost ignores how much these teams gain value over time.

And almost every fan who bitches about teams appreciating in value ignores the carrying cost on the debt and the significant opportunity costs involved for 9-figure investments. Never as good or as bad as it seems I guess is my point.

Clark,

You're right, I don't know about this, but I'd be interested in learning more. Most of my knowledge on this issue stems from baseball, where people like Doug Pappas (RIP) did a lot of work pointing out how FOS most of the owners were, but I don't recall seeing thist stuff mentioned. Can you expand?

Minus gov't or commercial contracts, yes. When selling something to the public, it's retail, imo.

okc will get a team in the future. we have great support (check the hornets attendance this past year), a decent arena and some huge $$ guys in the local economy who want a team here. Personally, I hope we keep the hornets.

NO couldn't support the team before amd won't be able to for sure now. They made something like $700k more per game here than they did in NO

I just don't see how the OKC area can support a major league franchise long term. Isn't the median income there like $9k below the national average? After the novelty of the new team wears off, I bet attendance plummets.

There isn't much to do there, so who knows.

The thing is, it isn't just OKC that will be filling the seats, I know several people from Tulsa and other parts of the state that had season tickets for the Hornets last year... Also the fact that this state is starved for a pro sports franchise will help... As long as the team is willing to spend some money and put a good product out there I think it would be very successful

This will definitely help in the short term. I am talking 10-15 years down the road, especially if they don't play well. Once everyone who cares has seen them play, gets used to having them on local TV, etc, are people from across the state still going to hold season tickets?
