When one is a poker pro, one is one's own employer.

I am going pro for the summer in between academic years. Suprising how much discipline is needed to put in the hours, not play badly etc... finding it pretty hard so far and only logged 20ish hours~!

going pro has been great. obviously, its not something that every player CAN do, because it requires much more than just poker skill, but for those who are capable of being a successful pro (especially when young and independent) I don't see too many reasons why not to do it.

I think something that factored in age might skew results hard. I'll bet that a lot of 20 somethings want to go pro while progressively fewer 30ish, 40ish, and 50ish aged people are plenty happy with poker winnings supplementing their income.

Exactly. It is all about the opportunity cost. I'm in my late 20s and have a good computer programming related job. When you count medical, guarenteed income, stock options, and opportunity for advancement I'd want want my annual poker EV - 1 SD to be at least 1.5x my current income and likely closer to 2x my current income. If my current income were $25K pro would be a possibility, since it is low 6-figure, however, pro is unlikely. But if my poker skills and opportunity were such that I could pull that down then I'd likely go pro.

I'm pro since January. It's been fun & the freedom is great, but I definitely overestimated my skills / bankroll and jumped in too early.

I'm in the same boat is everyone else; however, I'm only making 12 dollars an hour at my current job. I'm 23, have no kids to support, have no mortgage, no wife, etc. I can live off 30K year no problem.

Do I want to play professional poker for the rest of my life? Hell no. But if I can get by playing $8-16 LHE at my local B&M, it beats filing in some office or working construction for the summer.
