Okay fine but SEC will get an at large. Look at the rankings right now. 3 teams in the top 10, if Arkansas beats LSU it's definite that the loser of the SEC title game will get in unless it's some sort of absurd blowout.

Wisconsin cannot get in by rule. Period. Neither can a third SEC team.

[/ QUOTE ]

5. If any of the 10 slots remain open after application of provisions 1 through 4, and an at-large team from a conference with an annual automatic berth for its champion is ranked No. 3 in the final BCS Standings, that team will become an automatic qualifier, provided that no at-large team from the same conference qualifies for the national championship game.

6. If any of the 10 slots remain open after application of provisions 1 through 5, and if no team qualifies under paragraph No. 5 and an at-large team from a conference with an annual automatic berth for its champion is ranked No. 4 in the final BCS Standings, that team will become an automatic qualifier provided that no at-large team from the same conference qualifies for the national championship game.

If I read that correctly, Wisconsin could get in if the BCS rankings ended: 1. OSU 2. USC 3. Michigan 4. Wisconsin

It is all about the money. Rankings and "quality wins" mean nothing. Money. If a bowl thinks Oklahoma will bring in more revenue than SEC runner-up (say) Arkansas, then they invite the Sooners.

Read farther down that page:

[ QUOTE ]

All teams earning automatic berths must be selected. No more than two teams from any single Conference may play in BCS games in a single year, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large picks.

What has to happen for Notre Dame to play in the Rose Bowl?

I say this because my wife's entire family went to ND and her sister lives in Pasadena, Calif., within earshot of the Rose Bowl. It would set up nicely for New Year's.

[/ QUOTE ]

Obviously, if Florida goes to the NC game, the Rose will be USC vs Michigan. In any other secnario, Notre Dame will be the most appealing team. Essentially, it comes down to the Rose Bowl's willingness to have a rematch against either USC or Michigan.

If you are the Rose Bowl, and your choices to be the opponnet for Michigan or USC, who do you like? Notre Dame, Oklahoma, The Big East champ, Arkansas, or Boise State?

There are four at large births. Michigan is in. Boise State is in if they win (the books have them at 56%). Notre Dame is surely not going to drop out of the top 12 in the BCS, and no bowl is going to pass up on the $$$ they bring. That leaves one spot for either an SEC team or Oklahoma. If the Rose's SEC choice is Florida or LSU, I could see them going over Oklahoma, but even that is a close call. Of course it's all a moot point if the Rose takes Notre Dame or Florida plays for the title.

A little history, via Wiki:

1998-99 seasons

The first year of the BCS ended in controversy when Kansas State finished third in the final BCS standings but was passed over for participation in BCS bowl games in favor of Ohio State (ranked 4th) and Florida (ranked 8th). The following season, the BCS adopted the "Kansas State Rule," which provides that any team ranked in the top four in the final BCS poll is ensured of an invitation to a BCS bowl game.

The following season, Kansas State finished 6th in the BCS standings but again received no invitation, this time being passed over in favor of Michigan (ranked 8th). Kansas State's predicament (as well as that of undefeated Tulane who was denied a BCS bid because they played in Conference USA) demonstrated early on the arbitrary nature of invitations to BCS bowl games.

didn't Kansas State go on to prove their unworthiness by having Purdue beat them in the Alamo Bowl?
