Re: introduce a band to oot via youtube and wikipedia
This thread needs a'bumpin...
One of my favorite bands of all time is the Go-Betweens. wiki They are Australian. They started as brash and snotty Jon Richman/Radio Birdman style band...their first "album" (just a couple of EPs) is one of the best garage-pop things ever made, especially the song Lee Remick, which,if you can find it in the orginal single version, will change your life. Acoustic Old Fogey version that doesn't really do it justice. ( this is later, but similar.) They morphed into a dreamy pop band, but Grant McLennan's voice retained that atonal punk edge that made his songs more akin to Patti Smith than Tears for Fears. Some great 80s material: Head full of Steam (hilarious parody of 80s vids) Cattle and Cane Then they broke up and got back together a few years ago...somehow they still managed to produced interesting and relevant rock music like this: Here Comes the City Grant M. died this May. He was 48. |

Your Ex-Lover Is Dead - Stars
Introduced in live shows by Torq (their lead vocalist and also of Broken Social Scene) as "a song for the person you [censored] hate the most." Melodic indie pop at its finest. Also, I <3 Amy Millan (female vocals and guitarist in Stars, also of Broken Social Scene). Photographic evidence here: Audio evidence here: Stars - Look Up.mp3 Stars - Calendar Girl.mp3 |

Handle Song-Voice of Treason - Soledad Brothers
A blues-rock trio (guitar, sax, drums) from Ohio. Sound a bit like the Rolling Stones, maybe some White Stripes similarities. If you like stuff from the detroit scene then you'll probably like them, or have already heard of them. |

Tom Waits - Heart Attack and Vine - Live 1980 - fave of mine..."Tell me Brave Captain, Why are the Wicked so Strong? How do the Angels get to sleep when the Devil leaves his porch light on?"
Tom Waits - Hold On - Off his grammy winning album Roky Erickson - Two Headed Dog - live/acoustic Acoustic version of the rockin' classic. Not the best sample to get into the guy. Roky was a founder of the 70's Texas Psych scene with his band "The 13th Floor Elevators" as seen here You're gonna miss me But to be fair, you probably need to read some of Roky's history, get a few studio albums, and do plenty of LSD (if you haven't already) before you truly appreciate this man. Roky wiki Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds- Stagger Lee From "Murder Ballads" an album about... Hallelujah! A mellower example of the man Red Right Hand Older track |
