I'm certain this is the case. Top players who start at a later age are very rare. I don't know why it's harder to pick up and master as an adult, but the friends in my golf circle who are the best all tended to play junior golf 20+ years ago.

It's much easier when you're younger because you do less thinking. As you get older, you start worrying about all of the moving parts. Throw in the fact that when you're 12 years old, you don't realize that you aren't supposed to make everything within six feet.

Not too many youngsters have the yips.

Funny thing - after 44 years of golf I saw 2 aces-both in July. Of my 3 friends and son with aces I've easily golfed more than all 4 put together - still waiting...bastards

Personally, I'm glad you're here (coming from the third guy from the bottom of the list).

As for aces, don't sweat it. I played thousands of rounds in the seventies or better and it took me over twenty years to get one. There's a huge amount of luck in it. I've heard of guys at my club bouncing them off of trees, rolling them through bunkers, worm-burners...and still got aces out of them. It's a lot more satisfying to shoot a great round or win a tournament than get an ace, imho.

Hi BSF,
Close to 2k rounds here.
I don't sweat aces. It's sort of a running gag now, inviting me along so I can see what an ace looks like, etc.
I've hit the pin and hole and hung 2 on the lip - one of them an inch short on a green that a nephew never mowed that morning. More punch lines there...
Great fun.

Reading this golf forum ALWAYS makes me want to exit the tables and get out there ASAP. Still got the itch.
