Re: Case for South Florida and Virginia over USC, Oregon and Oklahoma?
[ QUOTE ]
But there's also the situation where a team dominates a game, the other team scores a couple TDs in garbage time and the game seems a lot less impressive. One I vaguely remember involves a Big 10 team that thoroughly dominated the other team and had a 35-7 lead very late. The opponent scores a few late TDs and 2 pointer, then scores again on the last play of the game to make it 35-29. Looks like a close game to a computer just processing the score (or to a pollster just looking at the final score). [/ QUOTE ] yeah for this reason coaches might be more reluctant to bench their starters for the 4th even if they have a huge lead. |

[/ QUOTE ] yes, but would you say it is more often than not that the final score is indicative of the difference between the teams on that given day? Again, any individual score is going to have a miniscule effect, it's the cumulative effect that's important. |

Re: Case for South Florida and Virginia over USC, Oregon and Oklahoma?
depends what we are all looking at when it comes to computers
FWIW, the massey site combines the computer rankings As far as I can tell, that is the best mix of who is the 'best' team and who has had the 'best' results for those that don't click links, right now, the combined computer rankings are showing: 1. LSU 2. Ohio St 3. Oregon 4. Arizona St 5. BC 6. USF 7. Kansas 8. W Virginia 9. Oklahoma 10. Florida 11. Mizzou |

Re: Case for South Florida and Virginia over USC, Oregon and Oklahoma?
Massey's combined rankings bring up another good point. Why in the WORLD does the BCS only use six computers? Do we really think the average of six ranking systems is valid, just because they're computers so "they must be impartial"? Can you IMAGINE the uproar people would have if a human poll that only had six voters were included in the BCS? Guess what! One third of the poll is Corso and Holtz!

[/ QUOTE ] this is what the human polls are supposed to be. it would be cool if every different voter defined their criteria for ranking teams then a ton of different algorithms were made and averaged. |
