It is nice every now and then when you watch a film, like it, but still not know why.

Yeah, this is how I feel about EWS. I think Kubrick's films can get by on art alone. You can just immerse yourself in the atmosphere of what is going on, while not even necessarily knowing what is going on.

I really wish Kubes didn't die young Man, that really sucks.

I love it when somebody tells me about how much they hated EWS, it allows me to safely ignore their opinions on anything else.

As far as EWS...I think of it as treatise on marriage and how you never fully know the person your with...thoughts on the road not taken...sexual intensity and base desire vs. security, love and companionship...that kind of stuff.

[/ QUOTE ]I interpeted EWS as saying the world of relationships we create for ourselves in completely contrived and that we are still driven by core desires that all the love and marriage cannot supplant. For example, all the love, security, family, child, etc. would not have stopped the Nicole Kidman from the one night stand with the soldier even if it cost her everything.

I thought he was saying that it is not deviancy but normalcy.

Utah:

I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with your interpretation of the film here, but I find it a bit coincidental that your interpretation of the film pretty much matches everything else I've ever read from you about relationships and human desires.

"a difficult book to describe -- what good book isn't?"

No good book. This is a good summary of why the movie stinks.

I bet you are not much of a Thomas Pynchon fan

I liked EWS. I have no idea why, because it didn't seem to make any sense to me.

I hated Mullholland Drive, because it didn't make any sense to me.
