curious how safe one's money is INSIDE places like this.
Thinking in terms of pickpockets, getting robbed or roughed-up in the mens' room, and having chips disappear from your stack while you're looking away or away from the table.

It sounds like the southern-Cal rooms are way more degenerate-central than most rooms I am used to. And I don't how much faith I would have in security and cameras to successfully catch every sneaky pick-pocket or chip-stack stalker.

I've never been to the California rooms. Would such concerns be considered over-the-top ridiculous?

[/ QUOTE ]

I've been playing at LA area card rooms for a couple of decades and haven't had an problems like these. When I leave the table I always have come back to find my stack in place. No problem in any mens rooms and I have gone in there with rolls and counted it out in the stalls. I almost always valet park but the times I've self parked (including this weekend at the hustler because the lot is so small) I haven't been worried nor have I heard any horror stories from regulars except about the lot at HP.

Some other posters and I were discussing how upset we were that Commerce was being invaded my so many 2+2ers. This is a great thread in that it will hopefully deter you guys from infecting our nice little fish pond. Yes! Stay away! You'll be mugged!

Srsly though... Bringing anything other than a gun to a gun fight is horrible advice and will most likely get you killed. If you aren't willing to ignore laws that disarm you and enable criminals to have their way with you then get a security escort. Their job is protecting the casino's interests which includes keeping gamblers safe. Short of that, just give them the [censored] money. Its just money.

There's a game I like to play called Civilization IV and when it starts up it gives tips. The one that always has me chucking is this:

"Never bring a knife to a gunfight."

I have had a few friends get robbed at the Hawain gardens and Commerce. The usual senerio is my friends play poker in the casino for a few hours, then when they walk out to there car a group of guys show them guns and pistol whip my friends and they take there wallets/purses. This has happened 3 times this year already and the security there never seems to know what is happening. Hope some corrupt security guards arent involved with these things.

[/ QUOTE ]

BTW, are you 100% certain that this really happened every time? Degen gamblers have been known to tell a lie or two to cover up their losses. I've been on the receiving end of a few whopper type stories and they typically give details like this: "group of guys show them guns and pistol whip my friends and they take there wallets/purses." Excuse me for being suspicious but most robberies do not involve "groups of guys" or pistol whippings. And when it is all happening to the people that you know...hmmm. Either that or you are feeding us a pile of dung.

How safe is the Bike? Thinking of playing in The Legends of Poker. I'd like to stay at the Commerce, what's the best option to get to and from the Bike if I don't rent a car.

the bike is 100% safe - even if you don't valet. The parking lot is well lit and patrolled. But there's no reason not to valet it. It hardly costs anything. The neighborhood is much better than it was a couple of years ago now that that the shopping center across the street has opened but it's still not a place where you would go out for an evening stroll (not that you would anyway) as it's just a commercial/residential area. Good freeway access but the worst freeway in LA (the 710fwy - home of the big rigs).

Check out Googlemaps for directions. The Commerce is off the 5fwy and there is no direct connection from the 5s to the 710n so you have to take surface streets for at least part of the trip. They aren't too far from each other though.

why on earth would anyone walk near a bunch of guys in a casino parking lot.

[/ QUOTE ]

Ray, good point as usual. I'll add a couple more here.

- In the parking lot you have to use street smarts. Stay away from others and this works both ways. For example, don't cut through a row of parked cars when somebody nearby is inside their car or standing near a car. It can be dangerous for you and scary to them.

- Stay in the middle of the aisle where it's well lit.

- Keep spacing between you and others. If you follow someone out of the club let them move ahead early in the walk or pass them with speed and see if they match you (if they do something may be wrong).

- When there are a lot of people around you are usually safe.

- On the outskirts of the lot get a shuttle as others have suggested.

These things happen but if you use some sense (along with the other hints) it shouldn't happen to you.

~ Rick

Exactly. Get your head out of your ass, not just around casinos. Except for professional robberies, which would happen only to high stakes players, stay alert and you'll be fine. Keep your eyes open (to know what's going on) and your shoulders back (so you don't look like a victim.) And that's no joke, about not looking like a victim. Muggers are pussies looking for easy targets. Old people. Squares in jack-mobiles. Those in golf clothes, not leather jackets.

Maybe it's just me, but I wouldn't have gone back there after the first incident. Two times tops.
