Fill a backpack with a week's supply of clothes and buy a plane ticket to europe (or anywhere with a lot of young tourists). You'll interact with people for a couple days at a time so you wont be so paranoid about being boring, and you'll have lots of fun experiences to add to your anecdote catalog.

This, or something like this, sounds like a good idea. (As long as there are no expectations for the trip). Just going out and doing stuff. He may wind up as a wallflower for portions of the trip, but it sounds fun anyway.

Sounds kind of like a social phobia, do you think this might be true?

I would recommend talking to your PCP about it and see if a referral to a psychiatrist is indicated. An antidepressant (some help with social anxiety) or anti anxiety medication may help.

I think that it would also be useful to talk with a therapist, try to see a psychologist rather than a social worker and engage in some talk therapy.

Longer term treatment wise a referral to a group therapy group may assist you a great deal (some groups are very high functioning, with physicians, lawyers, etc as participants). Most will take you on a sliding scale and insurance may pay as well.

So get assessed and treated medically to begin with. If you do that, in 3-6 months you will be in a much better postion to decide how you can work on this outside the realm of professional assistance (join a club, whatever).

I know you said you are in good shape, but do you exercise at all? Exercising tricks your mind into being happier somehow and you are more energetic. You should try doing some exercising activities.

I have the same problem but not nearly as bad. It sounds like social anxiety.

I can conversate with my family, close friends, and when I drink just fine but other than that I shut down socially and my mind just blanks out. I have been working on generally being happier with myself and focusing on relaxing(I have noticed I really tense up during conversation) while talking to people. Its been workig a little.
