Joker,

While I always like to see someone get excited and passionate about something they enjoy, I checked out some songs from the new album and, well...

meh.

But hey, enjoy it and thanks for trying to turn us on to something you love.

does anyone know the name of the new album?

they are really fun live. as for them being hipster music? i would say far from it. when i saw them live, it looked a lot like a large group of geeks had congregated, but i don't really pay attention to this stupid sheet no more.

they defintily don't have the same appeal as say the strokes, the killers, even modest mouse or DCFC.

i love them for their narrative song writing. the music and lyrics really paint a vivid picture. i think you either love the singer's voice or hate it. i personally love it, as it's unique and befitting the music.

their songs aren't as strange as NMH, but a little more so then the mountain goats.

i don't know why i'm babbling on about them. they are one of a few bands that actually keep my attention these days (which is a far change from years ago, when i had to get every album by every indie band, yet i never really payed attention to that many of them)

i guess what seperates them from most bands i listen to are, when i listen to them, i think to myself, wow, i wish i could write a song so good, and so story driven.

for those that don't like it, i think it's too bad, but not all music is for everyone, especially the decemberists. perhaps your musical tastes will shift someday and you can get into them (i know 10 years i never would be that into a band like the decemberists)

for those that do, i can't wait for the new album. i'm glad i checked OOT this morning, cause i probably wouldn't know about the new album.

private joker,

you ever listen to Tarkio?

they were collin melloy's band before the decemberists.

check them out, more on a wilco tip, but if you are a big fan of his voice you will love Tarkio.

later. J.

After around 4 listens to I would say its a solid album, better than Picaresque for sure.

My favorite songs which I think are definitly think are worth at listen are
The Crane Wife 3
The Island ect.
The Crane Wife 1+2
O Valencia is also quite good, the girls voice works really well in the song.

i have never even heard of the decembrists, so i'm starting with a totally blank canvas.

i'm don't like the guy's voice, but it's something i can probably overlook. to contrast, i like the lead singer of the thrills.

musically i think it's just okay. it's mechanically "inspired" in key moments, but it seems like prog rock 101.

the lyrics are what i cannot get past. WOW. it sounds like what system of a down would produce if they went to community college. thou, thee, water, riverside, zzzz...

it gets worse as i type this: the band is from portland, and the singer was born in montana. nice "irish" accent, dude! i guess i can't ignore the voice now.

i'm earnestly envious of those that hail this as the coming of christ, christ junior, or what have you. i wish i had something new to enjoy that much, but i'm going to have trouble making it to track 3.

So instead, here are Meloy's awesome lyrics for "Los Angeles, I'm Yours" from an earlier record

"hey check this out, he covers morrissey!" followed by "hey check this out, he tries to write songs like morrissey!"

i don't understand the chortles about some kind of accent, are you guys claiming his voice isn't affected?
