Again, they would've been in the running for at least one, possibly two National Titles if not for their inability to beat Florida.

Please tell me why you think that the 2001 Pats team was a fluke. Football outsiders looks at the performance of every team and player on a play by play basis, and adjusts for the context, then compares to all the teams in the league. If DVOA says the Pats were the 2nd best defense in 2003, there's a pretty damned good chance they were.
