Good for Torre. WTF incentive for a manager reaching playoff rounds?

The Yanks hierarchy is in shambles.

[/ QUOTE ]

I believe paying him $5 million a year makes him the highest paid manager in the game...thats pretty nice given the last two years your team has had nearly a 200 million payroll but laid a egg in the first round both times.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's also a 25% pay cut. Why? Because his "ace" was [censored] in the playoffs and Joba threw a wild pitch.

If you don't want him back, then don't bring him back. What's the point of wanting him back but demanding he take less pay?

[/ QUOTE ]

Because he's not worth the salary we have been paying him.

[/ QUOTE ]

Unless your name is Steinbrenner, I don't think watching games on the YES network counts as "paying" him. And having to take crap from Steinbrenner on a daily basis is easily worth $7 mil a year, without having to win a single game.

If anything, it's ownership's fault and Cashman's fault that Torre got stuck with donkeys for a starting rotation, past Pettitte.

at first i thought this was a solid move

bring him back for one year as insurance to make sure that rivera, posada and possibly a-rod resign and then don't exercise his option

now this is a bit of a cluster [censored]

im not sure what to make of this

[/ QUOTE ]

I think it was win win for Yankees.

They obv don't want him back but didn't want to a:fire him b: act like they had no interest in him.

They made him a very fair offer: He said no thanks

Now the Yanks can say we tried but Joe wasn't interested..we wish him the best of luck blah blah blah.

Mo and Posada can't blame the Yanks for letting Torre go. Torre decided he didn't want to manage the Yanks anymore.

[/ QUOTE ]

Mo and Posada aren't idiots. They know what just happened.

[/ QUOTE ]

If the Yanks offer them good deals, probably higher than elsewhere and they turn it down cuz of no Joe then fine. Life goes on.

If Mo wants to go pitch for the Dodgers to make a point that he is upset that Torre isn't going to be our coach till he dies...then more power to him

[/ QUOTE ]

Money talks. If the Yanks offer Posada and Mo $12 million+ per year, I'm sure they will be in a forgiving mood.

I think Steinbrenner is mostly out of the picture. I doubt the new brass operates in the same manner.

What to make of this? It's easy...the Yankees need Torre a lot more than Torre needs the Yankees....only the Steinbrenners didn't think that was the case, because hubris only affects those too arrogant to realize they have it.

fwiw, Steinbrenner the elder has pulled this exact "bad offer" move before.

Yankees offered Torre a very good deal for one year. He would still be highest paid manager in baseball without incentives kicking in.

He probably wanted two guaranteed. He said no.

I am fine with moving on -- not sure Mattingly is the right guy though... he has done some things that already trouble me.

You are grossly overestimating the importance of Joe Torre.

I don't think it will be Donnie...pretty sure its gonna be Joe with donnie either staying as bench coach or posibly coaching one of the minor league teams if he wants to
