Re: Gil Meche????
Meche's top end is pretty good, it's just that he's wildly inconsistant. I wouldn't be shocked if he had a good year, but I'm also glad that that risk is now somebody else's problem.
Also "Between this and the Lilly deal, I don't see how the Red Sox are convincing Boras that Matsuszaka is worth less than 10 mil per year" Did you mean 20, 'cause there's no way the Sox would lowball the guy that hard, right? |

Re: Gil Meche????
As Sublime said, DMats is not unrestricted, and the Sox are using the Johan Santana extension as their benchmark.
Additionally, they invested $51 mil just to talk to him, so even if they sign him to a Meche-like deal, it's roughly $20 mil per year cost to them. That said, if I'm in Boras/DMats shoes, these deals signed recently are absolutely part of my bargaining strategy. He could always go back to Japan (although I understand this is not his desire), play two more years there, and then get a ridiculous deal as an unrestricted free agent. I can see why the two sides aren't close. The posting fee really throws things off. |
