Are submissions dead as a primary weapon among elite MMA competitors? It seems like (from my perception, not from any hard data) the only submissions in high-level fights now are after the loser is already beaten to a pulp (Diaz-Gomi, Arlovski-Sylvia), and it's just a means to a foregone conclusion. Lower-level fighters make mistakes and walk into basic subs, or there's such a strength (or escape knowledge)mismatch that "weak" techniques are good enough for the win.

Is there a top-15 fighter in any division who has been submitted in the last 3 years without being annihilated first (or moving up 2 divisions, so Fedor-Lindland doesn't count if there wasn't a lot of damage first)? What's the ratio of submissions to KO/TKO/tapout from strikes?

Seriously. It's not a stupid question in a vacuum, so it doens't deserve a dumbass made up answer. What percentage of elite fights that don't go to decision are submissions, and what percentage are KO/TKO/tap-from-strikes.

Sorry- I knew there was no way today's top-15 fighters have fought other top-15 fighters 201 times to non-decisions in the last 3 years, and I figured this was another in the long line of "helpful" comments in here, instead of an actual attempt to help (answering the question about a different group of fights).

I shouldn't have jumped down your throat. My bad. I apologize.

the qualification for the query is any type of ufc bout w/ a betting line from ufc 52 and later. the distinction is between subs (including technical subs) vs. ko/tko/any type of ref/doc stoppge and subs from strikes..

the term top 15 is extremely subjective and therefore undefinable w/in the sql realm

Most people would of guessed he was being sarcastic. If he included his additional comments in his 2nd post on the matter, then I could understand why he'd get upset.
