Whoever is closing for the Braves at any given time unless his name is Smoltz. Wohlers, Wickman, Rocker, Kolb, and Liebrandt when he got put back there. [/ QUOTE ] Lets not forget Kerry Lightenberg and his retarded sideburns that seemed to point like arrows to his mouth as if to say insert [censored] here. |

1) if he pitches with the blister and gets lit up everyone will say hes an [censored] for being selfish 2)he has a 2.37 era in the world series Never happened? Did you see the 2000 or 2001 post seasons? [/ QUOTE ] Evidence from Clemens' tenure with the Astros: --absolutely the best pitcher in baseball during reg. season of 2004 and 2005 --couldn't hold the lead in game 7 of NLCS in 2004 --asked out of game 2 of WS in 2005 with tender hammy Even though he hasn't been "bad" in the playoffs, there has been a noticeable drop-off in his pitching compared to his reg. season dominance. Mitch Williams doesn't even get an honorable mention here? [/ QUOTE ] The question was 'generation,' not alltime throughout the Omniverse. |

[/ QUOTE ] what about kyle the human geasefire farnsworth [/ QUOTE ] I predict a heated anti-Farnsworth thread by the time playoffs are over. Maybe Mets sign him in offseason barring the discovery of steroid needles in his apartment... |

IMO [/ QUOTE ] Right. Most of the guys mentioned in this thread just plain suck - they aren't unclutch, they just are who we thought they were. For the best pitcher of the generation/all time Clemens has a history of shrinking from the moment. If the topic was basketball, my answer would be "Karl Malone" even though you can argue people like Nick Anderson or John "1-17 in game" 7 Starks, my response would be that they just kinda sucked (one lefty dunk aside), but Malone was supposed to be good, but never, EVER came through in a big spot... |

Re: un-clutchest pitcher of our generation
theres been a slight dropoff in the playoffs
hes been great at times and terrible at times i didnt say he was curt schilling in the playoffs hes basically performed at a similar level to his regular season numbers for his career To pitch a little worse that he has in the regular season does not make him a choke artist, far from it. Tom Gordon, Jose Mesa, Benitez, Billy Wagner, Hoffan- guys performing significantly worse in the biggest spots than they do in a normal spot is what makes a choke artist. |
