prediction for this thread:

everyone gives kipin ridiculously unrelated analogies as to why he shouldnt "steal" music. "ZOMG WOULD YOU STEAL A PORSCHE"? might be a good example. i agree with kipin here 100%. music is information. our government siding with giant labels is retarded. none of their citizens want it. analogies dont work here because music is different than each material object because its variable cost is exactly 0.

I'm not saying he shouldn't steal it. I just saying go ahead and steal, but don't give me a bunch of rationalizations.

Basically people do what they can get away with and then afterwards come up with some kind of rationalized theory that explains why what they did was so great.

I agree with everything MaxPower has said, and I steal a lot of music.

Winamp and mp3s I download illegally never freeze my computer or hog my system resources.

Oh, and they play without skipping too.

[/ QUOTE ]

if you have a valid perspective you shouldn't have to resort to this kind of dumb crap.

the service isn't built to freeze, hog resources, or skip. the majority of its customers would likely cancel if they received that quality of service.

I personally have no problem going to concerts and supporting an artist that way, but I will not, ever, buy another CD put out by the big 5 recording studios.

[/ QUOTE ]

yeah and i'm sure it's just because of the studios and not your desire to have free music. you are this much of an "activist" and you don't mind lining ticketmaster's pockets?

kipin is saying that music is information and that information wants to be free. physically going to a concert is not information. physically going to a concert doesnt want to be free. information wants to run like the stream through the earth and into the ocean.

people charge more than cost for material objects because of the work that went into developing them.

i don't see how that is different from music, you're just gayly abstracting it because it's not something you can hold in your hand.

[/ QUOTE ]

if people want to buy bumpers for their cars. my factory designs and tests a bumper, this is the fixed cost we have to recover. In addition, every bumper we make costs us x amount of money. the costs of the bumper= fixed costs+x.

With music, the artist records a song and it is mixed, produced, etc. The artist and label must recover this amount. Beyond this for every mp3 that is downloaded by a user costs them x amount of dollars. the only difference is that this x=0. my exact point. the cost of the mp3=fixed cost+x. the recording industry has a far far different opinion of what x is than what it actually is.

Ticketmaster is one of the biggest scams in entertainment history, and the fact that it still exists in the internet age is a testament to the power it has accumulated through the years.
