What was that, the day they started that miserable show where people try out to be SC anchors?

For me it was when they changed to a more modern looking set, maybe 8 years ago. I used to love how after a game's highlights were over they would show a page of stats for 3 or 4 players for each team and keep that up for 20 seconds or so. Trimming that down to make room for more stories plus the more modern set really ruined the show for me.

the set makes my eyes bleed. iirc they did this when they started broadcasting in HD so I assume that's related somehow. or i'm making this up.

When they spent hours and hours with that Amaechi/Hardaway case to tout a book made by none other than ESPN Publishing.

Wasn't that like the day we went into Iraq? I remember that week. We went into Iraq, I bought my first brand new car, and I got laid off from my first post-college full-time job. They were simpler times, when I appreciated a gentle breeze on the porch, and a scoop of ice cream. Now, life has become so much more. We have Wars of Terror, M3P players, and Hurricane Katrinas. <---- Said in Daniel Stern voice.

Harold Reynolds is one of most overrated analysts of recent memory.

Ummm...you do know that Harold Reynolds was fired from ESPN, right?
He recently joined MLB.com as an analyst.

For me I think the first specific thing I remember from SportsCenter that give me a WTF-tilt moment was the Budweiser Hot Seat.
I was scratching my head trying to figure out how they could possibly do something so idiotic.

IIRC, this came in BEFORE they went to their SportsCenter set which I think either looks like it should be called the Starship Sportscenter or should be doubling as the Stripclub SportsCenter.

so my vote probably goes to whenever they started Budweiser Hot Seat. It was all downhill from there.

Pretty sure this was also before they were doing the reality-show Dream Job where the kids were trying out for a Sports anchor gig. That might have been 2004 or so I believe.
Just the concept of that show put me on Tilt.

Speaking of which, when ESPN actually put that idiotic Tilt show on the air it was pretty much the sign that ALL of ESPN had completely lost their collective minds.
They promoted the crap out of that, even on Sportscenter, including a 'behind the scenes' segment on their damn show.

Wow, those were the days.

Without Dream Job and Tilt and instead substituing the lame Who's Now segment I almost wonder if ESPN hasn't actually gotten a little bit BETTER overall of late.
It's close and I can understand the argument that it has continued to go downhill and still is.
But that's how much I hated Dream Job and Tilt.
Who's Now sucks, but strangely not quite as much as those idiotic overly-promoted shows.

In other crappy news, my new place in Florida we don't have ESPNNews. Arrrgh.

interesting commentary all over deadspin.com about an interview their founder has with Scott Van Pelt about why ESPN is hated by bloggers everywhere. I will check out the interview when I get home.

maybe when they considered their personalities big enough stars that a reality show to find the next one made sense to anyone?
