Re: Words you pronounced wrong for a long time (or others do)
When I was in either first or second grade I used to pass by a sign on the way to school everyday that said "character." I always thought it was tractor until I had it on one of my reading tests and got corrected by the teacher.
I still say melk instead of milk because I like it better, and for a long time I thought that vaseline and croissant were pronounced with "hard" s sounds because that's how they were always pronounced by my parents(and in India, I suppose) Oh, and I didn't find out that raspberry has a p in it until around 2 years ago... |

Re: Words you pronounced wrong for a long time (or others do)
I still run into this with words I read that never come up in conversation. Recently I had beat into my head that ennui is not pronounced en-you-ai. It's even more fun since I was trying use it to make a point in a seminar.

I had to learn Organic Chemistry from a book and when I took the class later I never went to class, until one day midsemester when I went and for someone reason decided to ask a question...
"Won't that form a tertiary car-bo-cay-tion?" rhyming with vacation Prof said, "Do you mean carbocation?" I said, "Yes, and that name makes a lot more sense now." |

Colonel for me too. Also, I always read the word bosom as boss-om, instead of bu-som. I said it once at a friend's house and was roundly ridiculed. (ridicuwed? Heh.)

Friend of mine told us that he bought something from Home "DEE pot".
Another friend kept talking about getting a "puh DES tuhl". It took me a while to figure out he meant pedestal. |

Re: Words you pronounced wrong for a long time (or others do)
Honorable mention: pronouncing minute (describing something small) as minute (the thing with 60 seconds).
This is just in English. I've learned to read French without knowing the pronunciation, so there's another entire language of screwups with my name on it. |
