You said that unions were never necessary at any point in time. I showed one example of many where they clearly were/are. No strawman here.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's legal to beat ununionized workers?

[/ QUOTE ]
When you own the police, judges, and political powers, then yes it is legal.

[/ QUOTE ]

Sounds like the problem is with the government then.

[/ QUOTE ]
One of the things that make unions necessary is to battle problems with the government, something a lone non-unionized individual can't do.

[/ QUOTE ]

Right, to get special privileges like somehow not being able to be fired for joining a union.

That simply isn't true. Union employees are fired for cause daily around the country. Talk to your average pipefitter and ask him how many W-2's he gets per year due to layoffs.

I bet if you polled all those vetern workers 6 months ago, the majority would have said that 'unions were a good thing, but their time has passed, no need for them in today's world'. LOL

[/ QUOTE ]

WTF is a union going to do for people who are already fired?

[/ QUOTE ]
I don't think waiting until you are fired is the time to start thinking about organizing. Traditionally, unions provide assistance to their unemployed workers.

[/ QUOTE ]

Assistance how? So all the money the employees gave into the union comes back to them minus fees? Yay?

Assistance in finding new employment. Assistance with additional training to make yourself more marketable. Etc.

I really hate when people say union's time have passed.

[/ QUOTE ]

Me too. It implies they were needed at some point.

[/ QUOTE ]

True. Employers should have every right to employ Pinkerton goons to beat their workers into compliance.

[/ QUOTE ]

You win the strawman of the day!

[/ QUOTE ]

Wow, a clever picture. It's all so clear now...

You said that unions were never necessary at any point in time. I showed one example of many where they clearly were/are. No strawman here.

[/ QUOTE ]

Your example involved people being BEATEN. Sounds like slavery, not a voluntary agreement.

[/ QUOTE ]

Tom,

I believe his point was that, whatever it was called, unions were needed to stop it.

[/ QUOTE ]

I thought that *government* was needed to protect us from thugs. Now you're telling me that government won't protect me, but I need to join a voluntary association to provide for my physical security?

Hmm.

No, it isn't. Not unless they're into that sort of thing.

[/ QUOTE ]

So then why are *unions* needed to stop that?

Thank you for illustrating the problem with monopolies.

Because at the time, nobody else was.

Non-union labor benefited by riding the coattails of the union movement. Even though they didn't support the movement, and in some cases actively opposed it, their standards of living improved as a result.
