Police don't fire warning shots. Police shoot for center mass, to eliminate the threat. They must think they're life or the life of someone is in imminent danger. So just because a guy has a gun, doesn't mean they can fire upon him. He has to be making a threatening movement with the gun.

I can't think of many movements you can make with a gun that aren't threatening. It seems to me the whole point of having a gun out is to be, at the very least, threatening.

I have no doubt that your policy is the more logical one. |

just woke up and got back to this thread:
some guys speculated on the race of the guys involved in the fight. they were black. sb doesn't have a large black population but during these party times, a lot of them show up from out of town. some people said that i might be called on as a key witness or something. you guys got to realize though this happened in the middle of a huge crowded area in the middle of fiesta. there were literally hundreds of witnesses probably. i just happened to be really really close to the action, although given my position, i didn't have a good angle on where they shot at because i was looking at the backside of the cops. also from the moment the first punch was thrown to the last shot was fired it couldn't have been more than 30 or 40 seconds. it all happened so fast. i don't think sb has a huge crime rate or anything so i'm interested to know how often cops get to even get into these situations to fire their guns. i am about to go to the burger joint this all happened to go eat lunch. |

[/ QUOTE ] This makes perfect sense. If a man has a gun on him, and the police officer is busy firing shots up in the air, A) He may construe those shots as being fired at him, and return fire B) It's alot easier to shoot someone who is aiming at the air than at you. C) Shots fired into the air don't just disappear, they have to land somewhere eventually, and can be deadly. Police in the U.S. have to account for every bullet they fire, firing them in situations that don't require deadly force is not permitted. What situations in Sweden are warning shots permissable? |
