the problem is that just getting to a bowl game is worth so much $$$ that making tougher schedule's which would reduce thier chances for a bowl game from year to year would cost them a lot of money. With a playoff the years when their recruiting/coaching comes together to put together a team that is deserving of a national championship shot they only have to fall into the top 4 or 8 to have a shot.
