Phil 'no legs' Laak

Phil 'Brazil' Laak

(but Brazil is not the no-extradition treaty haven it used to be, so where would Laak go ... not that he needs to worry about the US authorities?)

[ QUOTE ]
Do we have any legal experts who can comment on exactly what criminal statute the blackmail would violate,

[/ QUOTE ]

Not sure of all the facts at play here but sounds to me like it's most likely to be an 18 U.S.C. 873 issue:

"Whoever, under a threat of informing, or as a consideration for not informing, against any violation of any law of the United States, demands or receives any money or other valuable thing, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both."

Or 18 U.S.C. 875 (which basically prohibits making interstate communications wherein there is communicated a threat to injure) or 18 U.S.C. 1952 (which applies to extortion threats concerning racketeering activity...which I suppose this could be)

[ QUOTE ]
what US authority or authorities would handle it,

[/ QUOTE ]

The US Attorney's Office for the jurisdiction where Laak was located at the time he communicated his (alleged, of course) threat.

[ QUOTE ]
and what evidence would be required to launch an investigation ?

[/ QUOTE ]

Significantly more than just some guy's random claims made over the internet (and Mr. Grant may indeed have significant evidence...I have no idea...but he would most likely need to provide either multiple reliable witnesses or verifiable documentary evidence of the threat(s) or both

Poker lesson 101:

Concluding Tom was willing to smuggle drugs is analogous to believing a checkraise implies your opponent has the goods.

Get it, boys and girls? Phil folded, as far as we know ...

Default New, Improved Phil Laak nicknames

KidPoker ~ Daniel Negreanu
RidGomer~ Phil Laak
KillGomer~ Phil Laak

Phil 'Killer' Laak

teasing Phil for hiring the wrong killer:

Phil 'the Employer' Laak
Phil 'H.R.' Laak (H.R. = human resources)
Phil 'HR Puff 'n stuff' Laak
Phil 'half 'N half' Laak(pays half now, half after its done)

Phil 'double or nothing' Laak (hired for two, got none)
Bunny

So we know know from his very early days, he had plenty of reasons to wear that sweatshirt disguise--way back from the NYC days at least. He is so lucky he isn't in jail for 20 or dead already for that safe job, etc.

The more I think about this, the more I realize that the settlement leans towards an apology and little if any money exchanged.

[/ QUOTE ]

No chance. Laak's not this stupid. It would be an admission of guilt. Letter, wire, email, video intrinsically their own record. Telephone, Grant records it. Laak flies to Thailand? Perhaps, but still recordable.

Did you read about Pattaya ? Pattaya is where the scum of the world go to live out what's left of their depraved existences before they die. Pattaya does not traffic in apologies.

If Grant's wife really does have MS he's got serious expenses that must be met each month, and I don't think his travel agency business is booming. Waiting 7 years until Laak is rich and famous, you don't wait that long for just an apology, it's not like they were buddies.

Phil 'Killer' Laak

[/ QUOTE ]

Forthcoming prison nicknames:

Kilo Philo.
Khilo Smaak.
Phil 'safecrack on smack' Laak.
Phil 'Leaving trackmarks on Laak's marks' Laak.
Phil 'Phillow Biter' Laak.
Phil 'Bend over and think of Thailand' Laak
or just plain old:
Sweet Chips

Laak explains his predicament to his cellmate:
"Jesus, man, I told him to hire VINCENT Vega, not Lil' Louis Vega. Instead of performing a hit, the dude just turned up with a pair of decks and tried to scratch him to death."

Anyone care to give cliff notes on this thread? I'm interested that it's still going on but have never read it and don't intend to read through 55 pages to catch up
