Most knowledgeable people thought the White Sox would be absolutely horrendous this year. They seem to be right. You're basing your opinion on the idea that the White Sox got unlucky and/or should have been better, but no credible evidence exists to support that point.

Well, the concensus prediction on this board was: Det, Cle, Min, Chi, KC.
The results were: Cle, Det, Min, Tied Chi & KC. Cle and KC ended up above expectation and Det and Chi ended up below expectation. It is possible to be predicted to be horrendous (your definition was always "sucks = worse than Det and Cle") and to perform below expectation.

As JoA said, it wasn't a good bet at even money, given that the Royals are absolutely terrible and it wouldn't be a stretch to see the White Sox beat out any one of the three other teams for third place.
