can we get a list of popular wrestlers from the 1980-1995 who are still alive? I cant believe how many are dead.

You may notice one of the saddest stories in wrestling history, one seriously messed up family...

Chris Von Erich - 21
Mike Von Erich - 23
David Von Erich - 25 (missing from the list, maybe he didn't wrestle)
Kerry Von Erich - 33 (also lost a foot as an adult and still wrestled)

Also, there is a brother named Jack that died as a kid by electrocution. Among 5 Von Erich brothers, only 1 is still alive.

Read their story sometime if you want to be depressed.

David definitely wrestled, in fact he was being groomed for the NWA title when he died in 84

Appparently, neither Kerry nor Kevin actually wanted to become wrestlers, but kind of fell into it because they were big and their father owned a wrestling company. Mike was too small to be a main event wrestler, but was made into one by his father. He couldn't handle the pressure and committed suicide.

Chris apparently had the most desire of any of the Von Erich boys But he was even smaller than Mike (I believe he was only 5'5" or so--the other brothers were all 6' or taller). He couldn't break into the business and committed suicide.

David had the look and the talent to be a big star, but died from a drug overdoes.

Kerry had the look, but not the talent. But he was a big star (former NWA world champion, in fact).

Today Meltzer reported that Benoit sent some weird text messages to some friends yesterday one of them being Chavo. They were really worried about Benoit and called the police to check on him. The details of the text message has not been released and is still being investigated.

PWTorch.com reports that "the message, according to our sources, said that the sliding glass doors to his house were open and the dogs had been fed."

Also, ESPN.com reports that "the boy had needle marks in his arms. The district attorney said he believed that the boy had been given growth hormones for some time because the family considered him undersized."

David was the next big thing in rasslin. He was tall and had a "claw" - I was like 7 when he clawed someone in the ring and it was unreal - looked very real. He was the real deal. Then he coked up in Japan, died, and the family never recovered.

The reason I think Benoit did both is because of the way the bodies were found. Both of the bodies had Bibles set close to them. I highly doubt that Chris's wife and Chris did the same exact trademark after the murder. Doing something like that is more of a calling card that indicates that one person did it.

Apparently, there's no sign of forced entry and the only people that were at the house were Chris and his family.

Just about every sign points to Chris doing this. He's a murderer and no suicide can gain any sympathy from me.

Something needs to be done about pro wrestling.

Being on the road for 300+ days a year away from family, while being hurt and using pills is a deady combination.

Pro wrestling needs seasons like in pro sports or at least give their wrestlers more time off than they are getting.

WWE® Shocked At Latest Developments In Benoit Tragedy, Concerned By Sensationalistic Reporting
Written: June 26, 2007STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.

However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:

1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.

2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit’s state of mind, and rightly did not do so.

3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.

4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.

5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.

WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities.

All,

One thing this really underscores is that people know far less than they think they do about what celebrities are really like.

The reports/allegations of domestic abuse/violence and prolonged steroid use do not fit in at all with what all the fans had been citing repeatedly earlier in this thread based on "insider information" from various sources.

The fact of the matter is, this is all big business and the fan sites and other sources of information are often, at least to a degree, part of that whole machine.

While tragic and shocking to everyone, I suspect that this stuff is far less surprising to some people who really knew him than to fans who were convinced they had an idea of what kind of person this is.

SK,

I think that regardless of what the facts of the situation turn out to be, it's pretty classless for WWE to react to the reports at this time w/ that release trying to distance their organization from any allegations of steroid use.

Oh, the irony....

And, it's becoming clear, and it will likely become more clear as time progresses that this dude wasn't the saint that the insider forums apparently paint him to be.
