he is obv a good athlete, but there are plenty of defensive ends who are bigger and faster than this guy

[/ QUOTE ]

Bigger than 265lbs yet able to run 100 metres in less than 10.9 + also super well coordinated?

[/ QUOTE ]

Lomu ran a 10.89 100m at his peak, which translates to about a 4.75-4.80 in the 40.

A guy 6'5", 265lbs, running a 4.8 in the 40 can be found on every NFL roster, and even more of them left in the unemployment line after the final cutdown day, because it just isn't that impressive on it's face.

In fact, a 265-pounder running a 4.8 is considered "slow", and would need to bulk up to keep his job, because he just won't cut it as a "speed guy" with those times.

Consider Tommie Harris is 295lb, and ran a 4.68 at the combine, that's like asking Lomu to put on a 30 pound rucksak, and then suddenly be able to run 5 or 6 steps faster than he's ever done in his life.

I mean, Rugby is great and all, but let's don't get ridiculous.

[/ QUOTE ]

And he's got the stamina to run around for 80 minutes and the coordination to kick/catch a ball well?

btw if this Harris is so sick why isn't he playing running back? I mean, it's a much more influential position that defensive tackle + the Bears running game bloooooows, why don't I nip down to see Lovie Smith and alert him to this obvious solution? Hell, why not play him on defense AND offense? Seeing as how he would be the greatest ever rugby player, where you play 80 minutes out of 100 and run around a bunch, I'm sure he'd find 60 minutes out 160 in a static but explosive game a piece of piss.

It's ridiculous to suggest that a country of 300 million currently has 50+ people who are capable of being the greatest rugby player ever if they tried. NFL has some incredible athletes, but so does rugby. And just because someone is massive and speedy doesn't necessarily translate to a successful rugby career. You need to be much better rounded to succeed in rugby as opposed to the highly specialised positions in NFL.

Awfully defensive aren't ya? Sheesh.

I never said anything about Tommie Harris playing running back or rugby.

We were talking about athletes, and in response to a statement about defensive linemen, you asked if any of them were bigger than 265 pounds and faster than a 10.9 100.

And their are tons of them that are bigger, faster, and tougher than Lomu.

I'll concede that he's probably better at them in cricket, rugby, and hopscotch.

You're right, that is ridiculous.

It's easily more like 5,000....not 50.

OK so your point was purely that there exists people in the world who both weigh more and can run 40 metres faster than Lomu?

Can anyone comment on this? 10.9 is much better than 4.75 imo. Breakdown of 40 times: http://athletesacceleration.blogspot...yard-dash.html
