Re: Albums that needed a few listens
But the biggest example for me was Kid A by Radiohead. I HATED the album when I first listened to it. So much that I didn't listen to it for almost a year. Then I saw a bunch of "best of the year" lists that listed Kid A. So I listened to it again. Still hated it.
So it went on and on like that for another year. Every couple of months, I would listen to it. I'd hate it and promise not listen to it again. But there was something about it that made me keep going to it every few months. I finally realized why I kept coming to it even though I "hated" it--because there were 5 awesome songs on it and 5 crappy songs. So I finally decided that those 5 songs were the best songs Radiohead ever made, even though the rest of the album sucked. By the time Hail to the Thief came out, I realized it wasn't just 5 awesome songs, it was more like 8 or 9. (I still hate Treefingers to this day). Hated Amnesiac for a long time also, though I took to Hail to the Thief relatively quickly. |

Re: Albums that needed a few listens
Definitely 10,000 Days. I was pretty suspect of the album even after the first few listens. Now I have a hard time deciding which of Aenima, Lateralus, and 10,000 Days is my fav. Tool album.

Re: Albums that needed a few listens
I usually like a few of the songs off of these albums at first. I loved "Idioteque," "Holland, 1945," "Heavy Metal Drummer," whatever. So I would keep coming back to these albums for thos songs.

Re: Albums that needed a few listens
I've always found anecdotally that the more times you have to listen to an album to really start liking it, the more lasting power it has and the more powerful it becomes.
I'll have to add Incubus - SCIENCE to this list. |

Re: Albums that needed a few listens
It's really funny, seriously--I didn't want to get involved in this thread, but then decided to ONLY in order to enter my votes for 10,000 days and Kid A. I climb in, only to find that I am obviously not alone.
What a strange phenomenon. When they came out, I was looking at each of these CD's the way Larry David does when he thinks someone is lying to him. Now, they're two of my very closest friends. |

In the Aeroplane Over the Sea was my choice for this as well.
Another choice for me would be Broken Social Scene's You Forgot It In People. I really like that album now, though I like to imagine that it ends after track 10. |

Re: Albums that needed a few listens
"Got" NMH immediately, but Kid A/Amnesiac took me a few listens. Others not mentioned:
Andrew Bird and the Mysterious Production of Eggs - Thought it was pretty average, now I'm in love with it Clap Your Hands Say Yeah - Man, that voice is rough on the first go-round, but now it's awesome. I'm hoping Some Loud Thunder gets better, I need to give it another listen. M.I.A. - Kala - This album keeps getting better with every listen. |
