Your government already spends more per capita on health than any other country in the world. Then private individuals spend as much again. The resulting health care system is ranked 37th in the world according by WHO.

Something is very wrong here.

This statement is a strike against a universal healthcare system...

It work everywhere else in the developed world. I can't imagine Americans can be that much more incompetent that the rest of us.

Hmm well...

It may work for you, but America didn't get where we are today by giving 50%+ of our paychecks to the government to let them decide how best to spend it.

So you want to give them more money to squander away irresponsibly? I don't think so...

I want to use a system that has been shown to work to replace one that seems to be broken.

Let me add my personal experience. I pay about $40 a month.

Knee Surgery Wait time 12 weeks (elective
Knee Surgery Wait Time 6 days (elective)
Retinal Detachment ( 1 hour )

There is no question that there are some horror stories of lengthy wait times for elective surgeries.

True Rich CDN's do go to private clinics abroad for quicker results.

One thing that I also believe hurts your system is Lawsuits and Malpractice Insurance. We also have the same horror stories with disability insurance as you have with HMO's Lets face it when private for profit is involved the patients best cure is not always the HMO's

The obvious problem is that you won't know that you need a new insurance company until it's too late.

[/ QUOTE ]

Creating what is effectively one big monopoly "insurance" scheme doesn't solve this problem.

[ QUOTE ]
I DO agree that it's a problem that we can't say where our dollars will go. However, it seems easy enough to set up a situation where all health care dollars will go to health care. I'm not advocating that government have an ACTIVE role in health care, simply that they are able to get better deals and reign in the insurance companies via group rates. (Note: It doesn't have to be government doing this. It could be ANY group. Government seems to be the only ones who COULD do it, though.)

And lastly, I'm not interested in distributing wealth. I'm interested in making sure that I can afford health care for a decent price that will ACTUALLY PROVIDE HEALTH CARE, NOT JUST INSURANCE. I consider that possibility under our current system to be almost 0%. I'm willing to listen to ANY idea to make this a reality, government or not.

[/ QUOTE ]

Perhaps you should start by defining what you mean when you say "health care" and "insurance".

[/ QUOTE ]

Health Care = Getting care that I need when I'm sick

Insurance = Something that sucks money out of my pocket when I'm not sick

As it is, your Health INSURANCE is NOT going to cover the costs of your Health CARE. Fix that problem, I don't care how you do it. Nobody's brought up any ideas that will do that. Therefore, I'll give the "monopoly insurance" a shot. Seems pretty obvious to me that this issue isn't going to go away. Costs keep going up every year. It's only a matter of time before you and I won't be able to afford it, either. I'd rather have an answer to the problem BEFORE that happens.

LOL at figuring in "Health expenditure per capita in international dollars" and "Fairness in financial contribution" as well as "Health Distribution" into a statistical analysis of the alleged Quality of healthcare.

I never understand why foreigners (you are British, right?) trash the US health-care system. Even if it's as costly and inefficient as claimed, it does spawn tons of R&D research that everyone benefits from. You guys should want to keep that money flowing, since it doesn't cost you anything.
