Re: One of my friends thinks Theo Epstein is an overated GM.
[ QUOTE ]
I also think the Red Sox got stupid lucky with Lowell's production. He must have found a new chemical. [/ QUOTE ] remember he wasn't very good last year, so it's not like we got 2 good years out of him. and this year isn't that much better than his prior good year. |

[ QUOTE ]
He's overrated the same way Joe Torre is overrated [/ QUOTE ] Joe Torre is way more over rated than Theo Epstein. Simply because Torre is a manager (Babysitter) and Epstein is a GM (difficult decision maker). |

[/ QUOTE ] ok my memory served me wrong. but still, I'm not sure why the acquisition should be considered that lucky. his warp years since he turned 27: 8.0 9.2 6.9 9.3 then he had the real bad season, 4.5 then (on the Red Sox) 8.1 9.5 so which # looks weird? it looks like Florida gave up on him after his bad year, and the Sox gambled they would get 2001-2004 Lowell, and not 2005 Lowell. they were basically correct. |

[ QUOTE ]
I don't think he qualifies as "very good"....The fact that his payroll is limitless offsets the fact that he went and spent like 100 million for Dice-K (way too much for the result) [/ QUOTE ] Given the current market for pitchers (the one where Zito gets 7 years for $126 million, Zambrano gets $92 million for 5 years and GilgaMeche gets $55 million for 5), getting Dice-K 6 years at $100 million seems like fair market value. |

Re: One of my friends thinks Theo Epstein is an overated GM.
[ QUOTE ]
Oh and the best GM thing is pretty silly, partly because I really doubt he is (Beane, Riccardi[ [/ QUOTE ] WTF? Zod, Lowell was lucky because he fell off the planet at age 31 for an entire season with no excuse, and 32- and 33-year-olds don't tend to turn that around. It was much more likely that Lowell would turn into a borderline replacement-level albatross and the Sox were just hoping he'd be league-average. |

Re: One of my friends thinks Theo Epstein is an overated GM.
[ QUOTE ]
The ss situation has been a comedy of errors. They had the best choice in '04 when they got Cabrera. Letting him go for Renterria (when the two had roughly equivalent stats) was flat out wrong. Then at least he makes up for it with A-Gon, who is only the best ss on earth. Then he overpays for Lugo who is fast, but inferior both offensively and defensively to all the previous guys at the position. [/ QUOTE ] i hope that this is a joke, because otherwise LOL |

Don't be results-oriented? By what other measure should one assess a GM's performance? [/ QUOTE ] do you play poker well? |
