whatever area you are talking about is probably not your "yard". you may be next to a utility easement. and your swale, if you have one, is not yours. it is most likely road ROW from back of sidewalk to back of sidewalk. orange it telephone, blue is water, red is power. the arrows or dashes in the street show where the facility is going. as do the flags. it's only locates and there isn't anything you can do about it. if they fail to replace the sod properly you can always bitch about that...

It cuts right through the middle of my backyard. Very close to my house. It is my "yard"

My telephone line cuts across my back yard. How could it not? It's got to get into my house somehow.

a POLE LINE. big brown wooden poles strung along the back of you and your neighbors backyards.

anyways, you can look up the ROW and easements by pulling your property plat. if there is anything more than access drops on your property than they have to relocate at no cost. if there are easements running thru your yard, then you are screwed.

I used to do this kind of work. OP, call these people tomorrow morning. They're the ones who told the utilities to put the flags on your property. The way it works is, someone who is planning to dig calls them up, tells the "one-call center" where they're going to dig and the center tells the utilities to mark their lines. However, this can obviously be screwed up.

Actually, unless you're going to do the whole shotgun thing, I'd put the flags back. The only thing worse than someone digging up your yard is someone digging up your utility lines. Also, BuckyK is right.
