To take this one step further, I could easily call the complex and say that I'm out of town but I gave my roomates the (x) months rent in cash before I left, and they obviously don't have their portion so they're trying to dump it on me because I'm out of town. It would never go to court. They either say, "We will find another roomate, because we did tell you you could move out early."

Or

"You signed a lease, it's up to you to find another roomate if you want to move out."

I was just talking about court if I was going to try and play hardball with em off the start. (which clearly seems like the wrong way to go about it)

it's a scam because you are trying to come up with dishonest ways to avoid paying for something that is your obligation. such as lying to a landlord to imply that your roommates stole your rent money and blamed it on you.
