Default Re: Chipper Jones - 2007 NL MVP

If people were wondering, here are the instructions given to the voters.

"Dear Voter:

There is no clear-cut definition of what Most Valuable means. It is up to the individual voter to decide who was the Most Valuable Player in each league to his team. The MVP need not come from a division winner or other playoff qualifier.

The rules of the voting remain the same as they were written on the first ballot in 1931:

1. Actual value of a player to his team, that is, strength of offense and defense.
2. Number of games played.
3. General character, disposition, loyalty and effort.
4. Former winners are eligible.
5. Members of the committee may vote for more than one member of a team.

You are also urged to give serious consideration to all your selections, from one to 10. A 10th-place vote can influence the outcome of an election. You must fill in all 10 places on your ballot.

Keep in mind that all players are eligible for MVP, and that includes pitchers and designated hitters.

Only regular-season performances are to be taken into consideration."

I don't know how to convert these numbers to a run value, but here are some updated fielding numbers from HBT:

RZR = Revised Zone Rating is the proportion of balls hit into a fielder's zone that he successfully converted into an out. Doesn't include bonuses for DBs or plays made outside of the zone.
OOZ = Out Of Zone, or the total number of outs made by a fielder on balls hit outside of his zone.

Listings are name, RZR (RZR rank at their position in NL) OOZ (OOZ rank at their position in NL)

Ramirez: .774 (last) 44 (t-9th)
Wright: .697 (5th) 77 (1st)
Jones: .642 (7th) 55 (4th)
Pujols: .846 (1st) 49 (1st)
Utley: .876 (1st) 47 (4th)
Holliday: .900 (2nd) 46 (t-2nd)

[/ QUOTE ]

given that these statistics are relatively accurate, defensively Holliday is one of the best NL outfielders, and clearly he's in the top 3-5 of the best hitters this year in the NL as well. how in the world is this guy not getting any love?

Coors field is obviously part of it (although somehow the same doesn't hold true for Phillies players who play in an even more hitters friendly park), but Matt has had a sensational year, especially as of late

What are the park factors? Does anyone have them?

Edit: Free on ESPN: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor

It appears that the Phillies home park is not leading to absurd amounts of runs. If I recall, they moved the right-center field fence back a few years ago.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/stats/...mp;season=2007, according to ESPN.

FWIW, Coors ranks 2nd, 2nd, 3rd, 5th, and 6th in Runs, HR, H, 2B and 3B, respectively. Doesn't seem like any other park is consistently as high. Shame.

If your argument is that Chipper has better "numbers" than Wright this year than that is a very weak argument in itself.

Wright has 100 more PA's this year. That is incredibly valuable , not to mention Wright > Chipper defensively.

Meaning that if they had the same amount of AB's CJ would be miles ahead

So why not give the NL MVP to Josh Phelps?

"Lameness of nickname" ought to be an enforced category for MVP voting. "Chipper"? GTFO
