Re: Just how young (and why) are the top players online?
This thread makes me laugh, because I think of that hand on youtube between Antonius and Doyle Brunson, and Brunson wups his ass, and Antonius starts whining, "You shouldn't have called, you shouldn't have called! " even though Brunson had the best hand from the get go and throughout the hand. Brunson was obviously waiting to strike, found the right moment and ended up taking the (huge) lead in the tournament. As others have said, young people are impulsive and reckless, so rather than being reckless yourself, you have to wait in order to strike at the right time. (we need an evil grin on this board.)

Your brain's biochemistry changes so that you have less desire to 'make it big' when you grow older. Also you don't have much playtime while working for The Man and serving the woman.

Re: Just how young (and why) are the top players online?
I think the lack of time to dedicate to the game is the #1 factor. Myself I am 26, have a wife, and a job, and I find it hard to commit most of my time to poker.

[ QUOTE ] "2 - young people have more time/energy to devote to the game" This is IMO #1 by far. You simply dont have any responsibilities compared to a married guy in his 30's with kids and a house, etc. [/ QUOTE ] It's not just time and energy. It's also a lack of financial responsibility. Most of these kids can burn through their bottom dollar without any real consequence. [/ QUOTE ] Thank you. If a 20 yo hotshot living at home goes busto, that's one more pizza this week his mom's gotta buy him. If I go busto, my home gets repossessed. I wish the boom had hit when I had no responsibilities other than staying out of the police blotter But hey, that's life -- I'm not going to begrudge anyone their success, but it's a fait accompli that anyone who gets to play 12k hands a week is giong to have a stronger likelihood of success than is someone who has to work 45 hours a week, take care of kids, and maybe get to play a couple of MTTs or an hour of SSNL 2-3 times a week. |

Re: Just how young (and why) are the top players online?
Here's another example of young people doing dumb things because they haven't faced these situations before and/or enough:
Recently at the Hilton AC, I was in a hand with a relatively old grinder (40ish) and a youngish guy (last 20's?) who seemed to be there just to have a little fun. Young guy has position on grinder. Grinder raises pre-flop, YG calls. Flop is 4d, 4c, 8c. Grinder checks. YG bets pot. Grinder calls. Turn is a blank. Grinder bets pot, YG calls. River is 10c. Grinder bets 1/2 pot. YG calls. G: Ac Kc for ace-high flush. YG: pocket 4's for four of a kind. Sheez. Was that totally dumb or what? Even the grinder was like, "you just left a lot of money on the table there." |
