Re: sicko
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] In America Alone, Mark Steyn points to some examples of women being helicoptered to a different province during labor because there were no beds available for them in the province they lived in, as evidence of the complete failure of the system to provide decent care. This book is heavily right wing, though, so I question his motives and understand that it is very easy to position anecdotal evidence as conclusive. [/ QUOTE ] Mark Steyn is a joke. He is the token conservative columnist in Maclean's, an otherwise outstanding magazine. [/ QUOTE ] Steyn pwns. However, rather than use his rather weak evidence, check out www.freemarketcure.com . Some interesting accounts about how the Canadian health care system failed people in need of certain treatment. |

Re: sicko

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] I haven't seen the movie, but I did see him get interviewed on Larry King. In all of his movies he tends to make a bunch of separate arguments which don't have any synthesis. One part of the movie he takes people who were injured during 9/11 and takes them to Guantanomo because of the great medical caree, they get there. Yet clearly him and other leftists believe Guantanomo is a torture camp. He can't argue one side when it supports his stance on health care and another when it is in conflict with his beliefs on US foreign policy. He also said that the average wait time for surgery in Canada is a couple of weeks, which is just flat out wrong. [/ QUOTE ] the fact that Guantanomo 'is a torture camp' is why its health care ptogramme is an effective comparison [/ QUOTE ] Exactly. Pudge, you missed the point of the comparison. [/ QUOTE ] Moore and many democrats/leftists. Have complained about the treatment of the prisoners in Guantomo. Citing they are innocent political prisoners and they are being tortured. In Sicko he shows how good the prisoners are being treated compared to the people injured during 9/11. He can't claim Guantomono is both a torture camp and a resort depending on whether or not it supports his argument |

I am with pudge here. His comparison seems like he is playing both sides of the gitmo coin. Is that place hell on earth or a health care wonderland?

Re: sicko
pudge, that doesn't follow at all.
Anyway, I'm surprised this thread is still in OOT. The movie is decent, but like most canadians the whole idea of a private health care system just seems wacky to me. I had a lot of experience growing up with the health care system in canada and it was all very good. The one non-private school health care clinic experience I had in the states was pretty awful, but thats beside the point. Even though I hate government intervention and love free markets as a rule, my problem with a private health care system is that it just doesn't seem to be an efficient method of distributing resources-in this case medical care. Therefor the one irrefutable argument for free-markets just doesn't hold. |

[/ QUOTE ] unfortunately, medical care isn't some static value resource. It's a market driven thing. New methods, new tools, better doctors, are all fostered when there's something to gain. With regards to Moore and the gitmo thing, that's nothing new for him. He does that in a lot of his movies (probably all). I remember thinking the same thing during Bowling for Columbine. |

Re: sicko
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Michael Moore spoke at PSU during Fall 2004. The school paid him over $30,000 to speak there. It was supposed to be about his new movie (this was before Fahrenheit 9/11 was released). But from the start, Moore made it a giant rally against President Bush, encouraging the hugely liberal audience to vote Kerry and so on. What a waste of our tuition money. Though "Sicko" does look like an interesting movie. [/ QUOTE ] He came to my college and did the same thing. A couple friends and I went to it and eventually got fed up with his bs and started heckling him. Long story short is MM ended up handing me a form to join the army if I was so in favor of bush, and security escorting us out because the entire stadium was threatening us with physical harm. [/ QUOTE ] you are a winner! |

Dude's a media-whore schmuck and his movies are usually one-sided elementary pieces of crap. SiCKO was better than most of his [censored] though. |
