Well, defensive statistics have been essentially approached as a companion to pitching statistics... I'm really not sure if it *has* been done, but I'm sure it has...

Come on...you do realize that zone rating is not the be-all, end-all of player evaluations? I have seen enough Crisp games to know he is not an above-average CF defensively. He is a good LF. He does not track as well as Damon, and his arm is average-to-slightly below average in CF. Of course, his arm will still be a substantial upgrade over Damon's noodle.

Okay... so you've seen him play. Good for you. Now, here are a few questions:

Were you watching him every second he was in the field? Did you notice how he was positioned each pitch? Did you notice, from the moment the bat hit the ball, what kind of jump he got? On every play? Do you know what kind of jump should be expected by the "average" center fielder? Did you see every throw, and compare it against the typical center fielder's throws? Etc.

I'm not about to say defensive statistics are everything. But to suggest that you know that they are definitely wrong based on watching a few games is giving yourself way too much credit.

ULTIMATE zone rating.

and as of right now, it *is* the be all end all of DEFENSIVE evaluations.

the 'i have seen him play' defense is silly.

No its a nickname his grandmother gave him. (crisp is his last name though)
It was funny when the indians had him and Milton bradly in their system.

[/ QUOTE ]

Thanks,
I always assumed it was his nickname but when I opened his played card and seen Coco Crisp on it, I started to wonder.

Yes that is ridiculous.

Good news, Red Sox fans, I haven't seen anything on Rotowire or anything to corraborate the story.

I was listening to the evil Boston sports radio talk show this morning as I was flipping stations.

Dennis and Callahan? Aside from the fact that they're right-wing-wingnuts, and they often talk politics on what's ostensibly a sports talk show, I like them alot.
