Default Re: HS/College or new grads: How big is poker among young people?

being back in school, I'm actually kinda surprised at how much poker I see. When I walk by some of the computer kiosks I will usually see at least one guy playing on FT or stars. I've also overheard a bunch of conversations about poker in random places and have seen people playing games in the cafeterias. Those are generally the non-serious people and I have come across a couple of people who have played online at decent stakes and we've talked about the rockford charity games in the chicago area. In my marketing course there was even a poker presentation trying to get a new poker circuit going, but they were very uninformed as to the online scene and the numbers that poker draws. Its not like there is poker everywhere, but it is noticeable if you are semi-looking for it.

adsman,

what are the laws on taxes on gambling in italy?

[/ QUOTE ]

In the EU, you pay taxes on gambling only if you make the money from the country where you are residing. So, to pax taxes on this in Italy you would have to play at Italian registered sites or casinos. This is why Italy tried to put a block in a few years ago. It had no effect though.

[/ QUOTE ]

so an italian citizen who lives in thailand would not have to pay any tax if gambling is his sole income?

No, that's completely different. In that situation you have to follow the laws in Thailand, EU laws have no bearing there. I'm talking about if you're living and gambling in Italy.

Young professional in Philadelphia, didn't get into poker until after graduating from law school.

I was surprised by the percentage of people from my school and friends of friends who were into the game.

By far, the most prevalent games are recreational one-table tournaments amonst friends for buy-ins of $20 to $30, or $5 to $10 rebuys. Occasional $100 games have been played. Only know 2 other people who play on-line regularly, the rest don't trust it or busted too fast to find it enjoyable. Some of my friends simply don't have the money to load on-line.

A fair percentage of these guys are heading to AC though, and the live NL games I think are in good health for at least the mid-term future.

I do not know a single person IRL making serious bank on-line. One friend got close to making serious bank, but lacked br management. Btw, I don't make serious money either but things have been going well for me on FTP lately so we will see.

PS: UCLABen, I don't think you're hanging with the right poker crowd at UCLA.

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, I graduated last year, but I probably WAS hanging with the right crowd. Obviously there are a number of people that are into poker pretty seriously, but my impression is more that the number of people who go to a casino on a regular basis has decreased sharply over the last two or three years.

BTW...I'm sure we have friends in common, if we haven't actually played together at one point. You know ALC?

In my high school for some reason there were a ton of people who were into poker. I think it might have to do with us being a little over middle class -- kind of enough to always have money to play with and want to make more, but not from wealthy families where we'd probably get lazy.

In college (Northwestern), there is probably about 1/3 who play once every few weeks, and are mostly awful. The >$100k metric is good cause I think we can be pretty accurate about it. I'm pretty sure there are only 2 people here making that. However, I'd probably rather be one of the guys making $30k and getting really good grades. I don't think it's cool to be playing poker. It's cool to be making a lot of money, but the guys who really are making a lot don't need to brag about it and usually just share among poker friends or close friends.

From my high school alone I can think of me plus three others who make at least $75,000 a year in poker.

Within the Twin Cities area, I can think at least 20 people who qualify within the demographics of this survey and make at least $75,000 a year.

you dont make 75k a year dont lie

I go to UCLA too.

there seems to be a lot of low stakes sng games($20 buyins) at the dorms and stuff, and some degens that go to live casinos, but I don't know that many people making it big.

I only know of 2 other people other than me who make >100k a year(and they quit i think)

At my University there's a pretty decent Poker Society, and there are a number of other fairly large societies around the UK. Recently, My Uni organised and staged the UK Student Poker Championship and we got around 360 runners for it which made it one of the biggest live tourneys in the UK. Also managed to get a $10,000 WSOP ME ticket added, which was sweet.

Anyhow, I reckon poker's pretty popular with the students here, and a lot of folk will play for small stakes - most are just hobby/low stakes players and I know only one guy who makes $100,000+ a year, though I guess there are a few who play at pretty high stakes; I know a few pretty big tournament players who've pulled in a fair amount and a couple who are going to Vegas this summer for the WSOP.

As far as athletes, poker here is just another society and there are plenty of guys who play a sport and play poker as well - maybe athletes differ in the US in some way.

So yeah, I guess it's pretty popular
