Maybe it's somewhat just because they are so short, but the first seasons of both of these shows didn't make much of an impression on me.

I should have clarified that I am talking about the US Office. The first season tried to be like the British version too much, and didn't flesh out the supporting roles enough. The supporting cast is what makes the US version so great.

I agree with him. They were okay, but season 2 of both of those shows were light years better.

I think the main difference is the length of season 1 verses season 2. IIRC, both Entourage and The Office only had 6-8 eps in their inaugural seasons.

Although I agree that there obviously wasn't much time for character and plot development, I would never classify these first seasons as "not so great". While ridiculously short, both of these seasons were awesome.

Also, imo, season 1 of Entourage is better than season 3 (so far at least).

Shows where the first season is much better than later seasons:
- The OC
- The Practice (DVD comes out in a couple months)
- Deadwood
- Rome
- West Wing (excellent for about three seasons)

Deadwood's other seasons are just as good as the first. Misplaced imo.

I enjoy Rome, but don't think it belongs in this discussion in the least. Same for The Practice.

The 2nd season is a bit of a letdown (but still good), but I caught about half of the 3rd season back when my girlfriend was getting free HBO and it's much more in line with the 1st season. I'm looking forward to when the 4th season hits DVD.
