Re: How many Harvards?
God, they say the same "Harvard of the South" thing about Tulane. Average gpa and ACT of students who enrolled there was 3.75/30 when I enrolled, after the hurricane those have probably gone way down. Not bad stats by any means, but not ivy league. US News makes us look retarded.

Re: How many Harvards?
[ QUOTE ]
Hobbs - I get the sense they are pretty similar schools with no discernible edge - I'm going off the fact that my friends who went to Williams (don't really know anyone who went to Amherst) note that no one has ever heard of Williams. [/ QUOTE ] I think most people who know what Amherst is also know what Williams is. And yeah, I think that in a lot of ways they are pretty similar schools. I will say that most people I knew in high school who ended up going to Amherst were douchebags, in my opinion. |

How is Washington the Harvard of the Mid West when Northwestern and Chicago exist? wtf? [/ QUOTE ] I've heard people that go to Truman State in god knows where, Missouri also refer to their school as the Harvard of the Midwest. I went to the University of Nebraska- Omaha, also known as the Harvard of Omaha. |

Re: How many Harvards?
[ QUOTE ]
Is Harvard generally considered the #1 school in the US? Yes, it depends upon the program, department etc. but in the UK Ox and Cam are considered the 2 best for sure, and us Limeys get the impression that Harvard is #1, ahead of amazing schools like Yale, Stanford, MIT etc. [/ QUOTE ] US News and World Report ranks the various universities, but there is no clear consensus. Princeton, Harvard, Yale, Stanford, are always at the top. I think Princeton has been at the top of this list for the last few years, but I would agree that Harvard is the most well-known in other countries. |

Re: How many Harvards?
OP,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Southern_Ivy_League "Harvard of the South" is also a commonly used colloquialism, and one humorous essay [5] asserts that "there are two dozen Harvards of the South distributed among the states that seceded to form the Confederacy. Of those eleven states, only Alabama does not claim to have a single HotS ['Harvard of the South']." Usually universities do not accord themselves that accolade, but "UF administrators have designated the school the 'Harvard of the South,'" according to the University of Florida's student newspaper. [5] http://www.plexoft.com/SBF/H.html#Harvard_of_the_South So which school is the real 'Harvard of the Midwest?" Typing "Harvard of the <whatever>" into Google is pretty funny. |

Re: How many Harvards?
I've always considered the top three to be Yale, Harvard and Princeton (in no particular order).
Rankings really are pretty silly, but for those who enjoy them, here is one set of rankings by US News: Some of the following were tied for various positions: Princeton Harvard Yale California Institute of Technology Stamford MIT Penn Duke Dartmouth Columbia U of Chicago Cornell Wash U Northwestern Brown John Hopkins Rice Vanderbilt Emory Notre Dame |

Re: How many Harvards?
All,
Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, etc. degrees are all pretty equivalent in the US imo. However, internationally, the name Harvard definitely still makes a difference. Also still makes a difference in certain society circles. |
