Category 2: Science

1. element of the periodic table - Hydrogen 9, Oxygen 6, Carbon 4, Gold 1

I am going to award 10 bonus points to Fishmonger, the only one to pick the element that is truly essential for life

2. name a chemical (that is not a pure element) - Water/H20/Dihydrogen Oxide 10, Sodium Chloride/salt 4, Alcohol 2, Bleach 1, Nitro 1, Propane 1, Sulfuric Acid 1, Carbon dioxide 1

I have to admit I probably would have missed water. And congratulations to Scott Howard for his greater-than-1 score.

3. Best particle: proton, neutron, or electron? Proton 12, Electron 8

C'mon guys, neutrons are used to set off nukes, electrons are used for the electric chair, and you guys pick the wimpy proton?

4. Name a single-celled organism - Amoeba 13, bacteria 4, Yeast 1, Green Algae 1, Paramecium 1

5. Name a type of insect - Fly 7, Ant 6, Grasshopper 2, Beetle 2, Arachnid 1, Flea 1, Mosquito 1

JustPlayingSmart gets the only sweep this round. Scott almost quadruples his total score:

51 JPSmart
46 nickp
46 RoundTower
46 hmkpoker
43 Fishmonger (+10 noncounting bonus points)
42 BluffBlank
41 the bram
40 Brain
37 HerbieGRD
37 Patton4
35 gharp
34 PartysOver
33 Chuckleslovakian
33 Mr Clutch
33 Ajo Go All In
32 Chrisman866
32 sighing
28 amplify
27 Shortline
22 mute
14 Scott Howard

JSP leaps into the lead in the overall:

102 JPSmart
94 thebram
90 BluffBlank
88 Fishmonger (+10 non-counting bonus points)
87 nickp
87 Brain
84 Patton4
83 Mr Clutch
82 Chrisman866
82 hmkpoker
80 sighing
79 RoundTower
78 Chuckleslovakian
76 amplify
75 Ajo Go All In
74 PartysOver
73 gharp
68 Shortline
67 mute
61 HerbieGRD (+5 non-counting bonus points)
19 Scott Howard

Category 3: Music

A band associated with the '70s - Led Zepplin 9, Pink Floyd 3, Eagles 3, Queen 1, The Beatles 1, Bee Gees 1, Chicago 1, Kool and the Gang 1

A band associated with the '80s - Guns n' Roses 4, Duran Duran 3, U2 3, Metallica 1, Bon Jovi 1, Abba 1, The Police 1, Toto 1, Van Halen 1, AC/DC 1, Air Supply 1, Motley Crue 1, Michael Jackson 1

80's were surprising spread out as compared to the 70s and 90's; I though this would be a 2 horse race between U2 and GNR. Also, the same guy that put Air Supply for this category put Bee Gees for the 70's, and if he sends me 5 POG dollars promise I won't reveal his name.

A band associated with the '90s - Nirvana 11, Backstreet Boys 2, Pearl Jam 1, Rage against the Machine 1, Smashing Pumpkins 1, Collective Soul 1, Oasis 1, Radiohead 1, Dave Matthews Band 1

1,000 bonus points to gharp for mentioning the best band ever.

A rap/hip-hop group (past or present) - Run DMC 6, Outkast 3, NWA 2, The Wu-Tang Clan 2, 50 Cent 2(!), Eminem 2(!), Beastie Boys 1, Public Enemy 1, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony 1

A sad day for the Beastie Boys when both 50 Cent and Eminem beat them in a Best Group category

A country group (past or present) - Dixie Chicks 9, Alabama 3, Garth Brooks 3(!!), Rascal Flatts 2, Soggy Bottom Boys 1, The Charlie Daniels Band 1, Kenny Rogers 1

Sighing submitted his answer as "Kenny Rogers (no, I don't know any country groups)". If only he stuck with "I don't know" as his answer, he and Scott could have doubled their points in this category.

And 3 points for Garth Brooks. I am speechless. I would also feel remiss if I didn't point out one persons selections included Michael Jackson, Eminem, and Garth Brooks.

JPSmart and Herbie both tie with 36 out of a possible 39; if only it wasn't for those unfortunate ABBA/Toto choices for 80s band. Didn't you guys watch MTV?

36 JPSmart
36 HerbieGRD
34 amplify
30 Chuckleslovakian
30 nickp
28 PartysOver
28 Ajo Go All In
27 RoundTower
26 the bram
24 Patton4
20 BluffBlank
19 gharp (+1,000 bonus)
19 sighing
18 Chrisman866
16 hmkpoker
16 Shortline
14 Fishmonger
12 mute
9 Mr Clutch
8 Brain
5 Scott Howard

JPS has a 2nd and two 1sts so far, pretty impressive. If only it wasn't for those 1,000 points gharp earned:

138 JPSmart
120 the bram
117 nickp
110 amplify
110 BluffBlank
108 Chuckleslovakian
108 Patton4
106 RoundTower
103 Ajo Go All In
102 Fishmonger (+10 bonus)
102 PartysOver
100 Chrisman866
99 sighing
98 hmkpoker
97 HerbieGRD (+5 bonus)
95 Brain
92 gharp (+ 1,000 bonus)
92 Mr Clutch
84 Shortline
79 mute
24 Scott Howard

I am pretty sure that protons are used to make protein, an essential ingredient in ham.
