I love Hemingway, but also think Poe was often pretty good. Poe and Faulkner are probably the two most highly rated American authors in Europe, or so I've read a few times, and at least I like one of 'em. Hemingway got severely out of fashion, but he still holds up if you can weather the tide of passing fashion. A writer could do a LOT worse than to read every last one of his short stories.

I have to disagree about Poe. He is one of my favorites. Youve gotta listen to The Raven read by Christopher Walken.

That sounds awesome.

I've heard a few readings of Poe, and every one was really fantastic.

Boris,

Guns, Germs, and Steel was a boring, poorly written book.

Fight Club, How the Grinch Stole Christmas

No explanation needed

Good call on Fight Club (going by the movie), but sarcasm about the Grinch right?

You're a retard.

Do you see why?

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe, but either way you're a dick.

Freakonomics isn't supposed to be heavy reading. It's marketed to the mass public and is a very easy read for a non-fiction book.

The Great Gatsby, is in my opinion, by far the most overrated piece of "literature" ever.

Even if it were, it still deserves reading.

Guns, Germs and Steel is garbage - that's three strikes.

Satanic Verses is a tough read - I'm not sure how it offended anyone because I am surprised that anyone bothered to finish it.

True, despite the thesis for the book being brilliant.

Stephen Hawkings "A Brief History of Time". It takes all of about two chapters to lose most readers - yet it is supposed to be *the* book to explain astrophysics to the rest of us.
