I really think Christina Aguillera (sp?) has a fantastic voice.
Dolores O'Riordan from the Cranberries has an awesome voice as well. She could sing me to sleep any time. [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] |

my favorites are billie holiday and janis joplin. janis because she goes for it every single time. billie is best summed up by this quote:
"when Ella Fitzgerald sang "my man's gone now", it sounded like he stepped out for cigarettes. And when Billie Holiday sang, you knew the cat was never coming back." |

Billie Holiday is a great choice. Another favorite of mine is Dinah Washington. Such a distinctive voice, yet so incredibly smooth. In either case it's definitely a jazz singer that gets the honors of best female vocalist.

I'm glad GW finally got here to speak up for Ella. She truly is the queen.
My number 2, I think I'll take Aretha Franklin, but not really for the songs you hear her sing on the oldies stations every now and then. I'm talking about her earlier blues singing. Dr. Feelgood, Today I'm Singing the Blues, Nobody Knows the Way I Feel This Morning -- Those are the songs where she truly shines. I'll take Billie Holiday at #3. She wasn't the most technical singer, but she was infectious. Nobody could sing One For My Baby (And One More for the Road) like she could. And the last girl I'll nominate will be Eva Cassidy. It's a shame she died so young and so early in her career. She would have been an absolute monster singing jazz and some pop today. Diana who? She's still got my favorite recording of Honeysuckle Rose. |
