Re: Carlos Lee signs with the Astros 6/$100m
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] Why didn't they just give 7/119 to Beltran?? [/ QUOTE ] It doesn't matter how much the Astros offered Beltran. The Astros were being used in negotiations. Beltran never had any intention of re-signing. [/ QUOTE ] They were also paying Bagwell and Clemens, so a contract like that would have been difficult for them to sustain. |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] Are some of you guys really not understanding that the baseball economy has changed? Or, is the only response you're capable of "that's too much to pay for that player"? Perhaps, at some point, the skeptics should tell who the think were the good free agent signings. ESPN.com's free agent tracker provides a good list. MLB teams can't overpay every free agent. [/ QUOTE ] Yes, they in general are getting fine deals, as one would expect. The only contracts that are just awful IMO are 5/55 for Matthews, 4/44 for Pierre, 8/136 for Soriano, and 6/100 for Lee. Everything else falls in the category of a slight overpay (1/4 for Sean Casey, 3/14 for Alex Gonzales) or a pretty good deal. (4/18 for Speier, 1/8.5 for Alou, 5/75 for Ramirez) [/ QUOTE ] The Pierre deal is fine, the Speier deal is terrible. [/ QUOTE ] wtf? Juan Pierre posts an 84 and 81 OPS+ the last two years and it's fine to sign him to a large multiyear deal? He is a good defender and he's fast, but the whole package amounts to only a slightly above average center fielder. Justin Speier posts back to back sub-3 ERA years in the very strong AL East, amounting to a 173 and 158 ERA+, and locking him up for just 4/18 is a terrible move? |

[ QUOTE ] Catalanatto's AB's were optimized by platooning. [/ QUOTE ] Beat me to the punch [/ QUOTE ] I'm aware. He's still a) gonna make up some of that ground b) make up some ground in defense and baserunning. He only needs to make up 5 runs. You don't think he already does that in D/baserunning? We're talking about one of the fattest guys in the league. |

Re: Carlos Lee signs with the Astros 6/$100m
fat or not, Lee was 19-2 in SB attempts last year and had 37 doubles. For the last four years, he's had 35+ doubles and double-digit SBs. Does it look pretty? No, but the guy can run bases. On top of that, his health record is pretty remarkable.

Baseball Prospectus does have Carlos Lee significantly worse in defense, 14 runs worse.

[/ QUOTE ] Using WARP1 it's going to cost the Dodgers about $2.1m per win for Pierre. Peirre is 28, which means he will play most of the contract in his "peak". When looking at it from that perspective, the contract doesn't look as bad as looking at it from the "ZOMG he doesn't hit HRs!!!" perspective. Speier WXRL, 1.3, 0.96, -0.17. Speier was probably lucky to have ERA's that low. I'm not sure where his DIPS ERA would stand, but when you give up 10 HR in 67 IP (2005), I'd expect you to give up more than 20 R. Even if you said Speier was worth $4m in any one of those years, which I think you can make a very strong argument he wasn't, I'd say it's not a good idea to give a 33 year old relief pitcher without dominant stuff four years. |

I don't miss Beltran at all. I'm happy with Willy T for a few hundred thou a year, giving us great speed and defense.

Woody Williams signed for 2yr/$12.5m. I think that is not a terrible signing.
