It's done to quantify the data so as to allow "data mining." If it was essay, it would be impossible to determine anything like a bell-curve distribution. Maybe there's a better way, but quickly measuring thousands of responders' choices practically demands a numerical-type grading system.

32...questions weren't anal enough. I had many strongly agree/strongly disagree answers based on context not addressed in the original question so I coinfliped. bs test.
