Default No Brainer......European Education System is Superior

It is a no brainer. The European education system is superior. Has anyone seen John Stossel's education piece?
http://abcnews.go.com/2020/Stossel/story?id=1500338
In this special, Stossel spends a lot of time covering the Belgium public education system. In this system, the money goes with the student (voucher system) so schools must be very competive to keep parents and students happy. UNLIKE the US system where the teacher's union has a stranglehold on education policies. Stossel and myself are in agreement that the teacher's union is the single biggest obstacle to reforming American education.....

On an anedoctal note, two years ago I took a few biology classes at the local community college and I was shocked by some of the dummies in the class. Many were just lazy but other lacked even basic problem solving skills...... During my first lab quiz, a hot blonde wanted to cheat off me. Using my normal tack and diplomacy, I told her to go [censored] herself. She never tried to cheat off me again but for the rest of the semester she was very flirtacious towards me (which is pretty good for a 40 yr old with a belly )..... Just when I think I understand women they find another way to suprise me...

There are a number of solid humane arguments as to why we don't want workers and their families exploited for $1.50 an hour.

[/ QUOTE ]
Why do you think this would happen without a minimum wage?
[ QUOTE ]
The same arguments don't hold for why we should prevent people earning more than above some arbitrary number.

[/ QUOTE ]
Funny you should use the phrase "arbitrary number" while supporting a minimum wage. Because that's all the minimum wage and a "living wage" is.

Just a thought:

In PA, Senator Santorum (R) argued during his campaign that too many families have both parents working, to the detriment to the children--yet he's against an increase in the minimum wage.

It seems to me that proponents of "stay at home moms" ought to be IN FAVOR of an increase. Plenty of working moms aren't working for personal fufillment--it's that, in this economic climate, a minimum-wage earning father simply can't support himself, his wife, and a child--there simply aren't enough hours in the day. An increase in the minimum wage might result in more moms electing to stay home (or at least reducing the number of hours worked). Thus, politicians such as Santorum run the risk of being seen as hypocrites.

[/ QUOTE ]

I'll go out on a limb without any facts to back it up. But I'll say that the % of married people with children making minimum wage is in the single digits. And probably the low single digits.

When someone enters the job market with no experience and no skills, they're expected to become at least slightly more valuable in a reasonable amount of time. The wage scale is a ladder - not a bed.

My niece got her first raise in a couple of weeks, just because she smiled alot at the customers - it's not very hard to get off that bottom wrung of the ladder.

[/ QUOTE ]I'm glad you felt flattered when a 40-year old with a belly flirted with you.

Shows you're not discriminating in yer tastes.

(Incidentally, teachers unions are quite strong in Belgium.)

A possible price ceiling on the rich has got nothing to do with the poor having access to a minimum wage. There are a number of solid humane arguments as to why we don't want workers and their families exploited for $1.50 an hour.

[/ QUOTE ]

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarggggggggggg

ok to start with there are about 15 other threads on min. wage.
The "poor" or "less fortunate" already have access to higher wages. They get paid more by being WORTH MORE to the employer. Because someone is ignorant, lazy or somehow otherwise a less desireable employee we should pay them more ?? Any breathing human can make more than the minimum wage. This "living wage" garbage is a strawman and im sick to death of it.
Lets get to the meat of your statist argument without all this obfuscaton in the name of helping people. Just say "I think the world would be better when the government controls our money "

Legalize medical marijuana.

NO on allowing school prayer during the War on Terror.

good... the state shouldnt run schools but if its going to at least dont mke them indoctrination centers for jeebus freaks

YES on requiring states to test students.

again the state shouldnt run schools but if it is going to at least make shure they are doing something with our stolen money.

Reduce class size to 18 children in grades 1 to 3.

jobs program for teacher unions

NO on implementing Bush-Cheney national energy policy.

partisan garbage

YES on starting implementation of Kyoto Protocol.

Kyoto is bad science stacked onto bad policy. again with the partisan / anti-industry garbage

Preserve Alaska's ANWR instead of drilling it.

protectoinism, favoritism, statism WASTE PORK WASTE. If amtrak didn't suck they would be fine.

NO on deauthorizing "critical habitat" for endangered species.

hard to say i dont know much about this in particular. But i suspect that the current laws are to convoluted to be effective.

NO on speeding up approval of forest thinning projects.

proper forrest management makes sense. I grew up in a forestry mgmt family. The thinning proposals are sound and usefull. just like ANWAR this is just pandering to the greenpeace types.

NO on Permanent Normal Trade Relations with China.

protectionist anti-industry

NO on withdrawing from the WTO.

good if we have a global trade system we need a decent court to adress problems. (not that the WTO is perfect)

YES on campaign finance reform banning soft-money contributions.

Soft money is a stupid issue. if i give money to a party they should be able to share it as needed.

NO on making the Bush tax cuts permanent.

kiss my ass

YES on establishing "network neutrality" (non-tiered Internet).

good

NO on authorizing military force in Iraq.

"As a member of the House Intelligence Committee, I am keenly aware that the proliferation of chemical and biological weapons is an issue of grave importance to all nations. Saddam Hussein has been engaged in the development of weapons of mass destruction technology which is a threat to countries in the region and he has made a mockery of the weapons inspection process."

pandering political expediency

NO on banning Internet gambling by credit card.

If you just think government spending is bad on general principle... well nobody cares. I think contraception, family planning, stem cell research are great places to spend money.
