does anyone know what kind of relationship Pinella and ARod had while they were in Seattle?

[/ QUOTE ]

Father-son. No joke, they are very, very close. A-Rod has said before that Lou is like a "second father" to him. When A-Rod was having his worst struggles this year, Lou came and talked to him at his house until 3 AM. The next few days started his super-hot streak he had during the late part of the year.

As a lifelong Yankee fan I am obviously dissapointed with this years outcome, but I can't say I am surprised. They haven't been a real "team" in quite some time ... they may be fun to go see during the regular season if you catch a good game with lots of fireworks coming from their lineup, but in the back of your mind you knew they were not greater than the sum of their parts.

I like Joe Torre, but damn man, show some emotion in the dugout. Obviously this is just coming from watching the games on TV and a few times at the stadium, but I've never seen Torre get his team fired up while the game is being played. I've never seen him do anything but sit back with those dark eyes and scowl and tell his other managers to go take care of something. If Joe is indeed fired ( or he resigns to save face ) I don't think he'll go anywhere else. Maybe this is obvious, but it came up in this thread that he'll go to the Cubs.

I think Pinella is a great choice as he has serious balls and spitfire. I'd love to have a manager that busted his players asses and told them they sucked.

What this team is more ball players, not ballers.

True. They've been an All-Star team.

I think Torre has been a master of using his bullpen. The best example that comes to mind is when he unexpectedly took out Denny Neagle with two outs in the 5th in a 3-2 game with Mike Piazza coming up in the 2000 World Series. He brought in David Cone, who got out Piazza and then they went on the win the game 3-2.

The Yankees gave up 767 runs this year, Detroit just 675.

This is one of a handful of times that I've heard, "My manager knows how to use his bullpen."

It amazes me that every big league team manages to find the one person on the planet who doesn't know how to use the pen as well as a fan who's never been on a big league bench.

Unless Piniella can pitch, he won't help.

Huh?

I gave an example of what I think was excellent use of hte bullpen; I could give more. I guess I'm not understanding your point. It's true I've never beeen on a big league bench, but does it really take a chicken to recognize an egg?

CDS,

Are you suggesting firing Bobby Cox would be the right move too?

[/ QUOTE ]

If the owner was spending 200 million every year then yes.
When you spend that kind of money winning your division is meaningless.

firing torre may not be the right move in terms of leading the Yanks to the WS...but it can't hurt...cuz so far the staus quo hasn't been working.

So you think using Villone and Proctor as much as he did was prudent? Having 2 guys in your bullpen who lead the league in relief pitches thrown? That's good bullpen management, right?

andy that's a good example of playoff bullpen use, but in the regular season, Torre stinks - he blows out at least one relief pitcher a season.
