I am LE STUPID.

Castlevania is certainly great, I didn't forget it, though. I just don't think it's a Canonical selection. Honorable mention, perhaps.

I think Contra deserves to be on the list though. I also think DD deserves it. You are right about Ninja Gaiden though, I just loaded it up...ehhh put the cartridge in and its not as cool as I remember it being.

Really? I think Ninja Gaiden has to go on the list. The soundtrack and the cut scenes between each stage were pretty freaking amazing.

Both true, but the gameplay is pretty uninspiring.

Excellent point - those cut scenes were pretty intense, and the soundtrack is superb. The game was pretty good too, I felt - only problem was if you lost vs. the final boss, you had to go back to 6-1.

Wizards and Warriors? Haha.

Did kyle say Battletoads, too? Another obscure Tradewest game who by no means belongs in the canon but deserves some mention is Solar Jetman.

I have to disagree with you on that one. Castlevania had an awesome soundtrack, and the Castlevania series is next in line behind Zelda, Mario, Metroid, and Mega Man.

Castlevania should make it because of the franchise it created. Bionic Commando is probably a better game than Castlevania 1, but "historical" relevance does count for a lot.

Kyle's list is pretty damn good. And holy crap that most popular games list on Gamespot was a huge help.

Here's mine, in no particular order beyond #1...

Metroid
Bionic Commando
Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!
Dragon Warrior (as a series; as individual games, 3 and 4 are among the very best)
The Legend of Zelda (don't mind having II here either)
Faxanadu
Final Fantasy
River City Ransom
Super Mario Bros. 1 and 3
Mega Man (as a series, but I do think the first one is probably the best and the first 3 are the best 3)
Tecmo Super Bowl
Blades of Steel
Kid Icarus
R.C. Pro-Am

My second tier:
Metal Gear
Milon's Secret Castle
Contra
Rygar
StarTropics
Castlevania (series)
Ninja Gaiden (series)
Pro Wrestling
Shadowgate
Blaster Master
Arkanoid
Gauntlet
Super Dodge Ball
Ultima (Exodus and Quest of the Avatar)
Clash at Demonhead

And others I really enjoyed a lot but I wouldn't put in the canon:
TMNT II
The Battle of Olympus
Strider
Crystalis
Adventures of Lolo (series)
Life Force
Wizards and Warriors (I and II)
Dusty Diamond's All-Star Softball
Willow
Who Framed Roger Rabbit?
Legacy of the Wizard
Adventure Island (series)
Bubble Bobble
Tetris
DuckTales

There may be even more than this.

nath,

Thanks for the comments. That said, Kid Icarus is a good selection that I forgot about.

I still haven't consulted a list, but if I do, I'm pretty sure I'll remember a few that I forgot to add.

I consider this to be one of my very best fields in terms of depth of knowledge and expertise, so you will probably hear from me quite a bit in this thread

I don't think anyone has has made a nomination I would consider bad, and some of them I don't have on my list merely because I didn't play them nearly as much as the ones I listed, or because I had associations with them from versions not on the NES (Maniac Mansion being a prime example).

Maniac Mansion on NES is better than the PC versions because of the music.
