Re: Suppose There Was No Bible
Religion got there with expressing the non-physical concepts first.
Science's just plodding along. It'll get there too. To have them as cooperative antagonists isn't so bad at times, really. |

Re: Suppose There Was No Bible
I dont think science can discuss the non-physical, even in principle.

Re: Suppose There Was No Bible
[ QUOTE ]
What I was suggesting was that there are physical things and non-physical things. [/ QUOTE ] If there is 'something' that never affects a physical system ( I can hardly type that).. it never makes me cry, it never stops the rain, it never 'does' anything ... then there is no difference between it existing and it not existing. If religion wants to claim it knows all about things that don't cause anything then 'have at it'. Every so often one of them gets out of line and one or two americans will be found praying to stop somebodies fever or for a storm not to do damage or ... That's making claims about physical reality not 'something else'. really, luckyme |

How different is religion from quantum theory, really? [/ QUOTE ] Well, I don't think we'll we able to build a super computer based on somebody's religious beliefs. QM makes statements about what things will 'do', how X will affect Y. luckyme |

Re: Suppose There Was No Bible
[ QUOTE ]
Science looks outward and tries to figure out why things work. Most religions, things work, ok, and we don't know how they do. They just do. Look within yourself and listen to what we have discovered to find out why you work in the scheme of things. [/ QUOTE ] Do I scratch neuroscience, etc, off my list of sciences? luckyme |

Definitely not. I'm not a fan of religion, but I'll allow for the posit it might be a necessary madness, still.

Too many societies, ancient, recent and modern get by just fine without one. ( Beliefs in magical beings or the equivalent). luckyme |

Re: Suppose There Was No Bible
No. But can the majority of humanity make the transition right now? Probably not.
It'd be fallacious not to realize that the RCC and some Islamic clerics, for some more obvious examples, do realize this is happening. I like Taoism. When hungry, eat. When tired, sleep. When you need to make water, do. Aborginial Aussies and the Dreamtime, and simiar aborigine philosophies. |

Europe moved away from religion in the days when knowledge and science were in high regard. Science now is out of the hands of the average man and is taking on an aura of 'magic', that's why people start to equate QM and religion ... they can't explain/understand either one. there'll be/is a resurgence of religion since it always fills the gap of ignorance and modern science is not able to fill in those gaps at a level your average guy on the street can grasp. luckyme |
