[ QUOTE ] I think these numbers are way too high. [/ QUOTE ] Ok, what would a better estimate be? q/q [/ QUOTE ] Honestly, I don't think this question can be answered because "war with Iran" can mean so many things. If we decided to fight a proxy war like we did in Afganistan then I think the numbers could be very low. If a war with Iran ignites an escalation into into a WW3 senario involving China, Russia, Pakistan, India, North Korea, Syria, Turkey, and Europe then I think the highest estimate above is too low by atleast a factor of ten maybe by a factor of a hundred. In 2002 the Congress approved the use of nuclear weapons by the military in preemptive moves. What if the only way to bomb the nuclear sites is to use nukes and we go ahead and do it and Russia, China, and North Korea panic and all hell breaks loose? There are just too many contingencies to really know anything until the [censored] hits the fan. |

Re: War with Iran: spell it out.
New,
Reread the OP and tell me there was ever a chance of this not being a partisan bitching mathc. Q/Q, I think a ground war is vanishingly unlikely. I would say < 50 US servicemen dead and cost < $5 billion for an air campaign. |

Honestly, I don't think this question can be answered because "war with Iran" can mean so many things. [/ QUOTE ] But the fact is that in order to plan a military action, these questions HAVE to be answered, at least to the best of the planners' abilities. I agree that the contingencies you cite stongly influence the outcome, but, as in poker, not all of these outcomes are equally likely. So, which scenario do you think is most likely? And what would the outcome be in terms of dollars and lives? I'm not asking for perfection, just a sense of what your most realistic expectations are. q/q |

Re: War with Iran: spell it out.
[ QUOTE ]
Why cant we just get Israel to bomb 'em for us? [/ QUOTE ] while you are likely joking, in my opinion it is vital to not allow israel to go to war with iran. right now iran has virtually no true allies in the middle east. as this situation proggresses, it is vital that we do not create allies for iran in the region. the one sure way to allign arab countries with iran is to let israel go to war with them. if we play this smart, we can pit alot of arab countries against iran. succesfully doing this could give us a leg up in diplomatic negotiations as well as an armed intervention. |
