Some of these names are mind boggling. You don't make it into the HoF by being the best player on your team. You make it by being one of the best players in the league, for a long time. Be serious people.

Just curious, what does everyone think of the one sided defensive minded player? Mutombo has been mentioned as borderline. Dennis Rodman with all his antics probably won't make it, but he was a hell of a rebounder and has 5 rings. And then there's Ben Wallace who has 4 DPOY. So which of these 3 should make it if any?

[/ QUOTE ]

I just realized I forgot about Rodman. I think he's a no but it's pretty close. Also Vince Young is a lock for the NFL and NBA HOF.

Current players who have played a while (I'm leaving out the Wade's, Lebron's, etc, because they have don't have much of a career to reflect on). I'm sure I'm missing some names.

Locks:
Duncan
Shaq
KG
Kidd
Payton
AI
Kobe

Borderline/Falls Just short:
Dirk (needs more good years)
Nash (will probably make it with 2 or 3 more years like this, especially if PHX wins the big one)
Webber (I don't think he makes it)
TMac (I don't think he makes it)
Vince Carter (I doubt it)
Paul Pierce (not gonna do it, unless the C's get lucky and bag a ring or two in the twilight of his career).

Any stat guys know about basketball-reference's HoF Probability stat? I haven't looked too closely into it, though it does factor in height, which I'm sure factors into some of the lower numbers for PG types.

Some interesting numbers from some guys with that one. The locks, like Shaq, Duncan, Kobe, AI, and KG, are all +97%. Payton and Kidd aren't ranked that high, with 88% and 87%, respectively.

The borderline guys I mentioned are mostly in the 75-85 range, except Vince, Dirk, and Nash. Vince is ranked quite high: 92.6%. I found that surprising, because out of the TMac, Pierce, and Vince trio, I think he's the least likely to get the vote.

Dirk and Nash are pretty low. Dirk is around 61%. Nash is the real neat one. 11%

[/ QUOTE ] Maybe because he wasn't that good in Dallas. His best seasons have all been in Phoenix.

gee thanks TSC. Couldn't figure it out. I was just pointing out how a statistical model (method's credentials unconfirmed) rate him damn low, but he's got a better shot at the hall than most non-lock guys.

Chris Webber dominated NBA 2K2 for Dreamcast. He should be in considering he averaged like 60/15/5 during my seasons.

He's had better seasons of late, but I wouldn't say he's a lock as others would. His numbers so far are similar to Kevin Johnson's who won't be in the HOF, but Nash will probably play longer than Johnson did, plus Nash also isn't known for his defense. I'm glad Nash didn't win his 3rd MVP and I hope he never does because that would put him in this group: Russell, Wilt, Abdul-Jabar, Moses Malone, Bird, Magic, Jordan, Nash. Which one doesn't belong?

How do people feel about Christian Laettner?

I don't think he did quite enough in the NBA but I think it's pretty close.

First ballot and it isn't even close. Saying Christian Laettner shouldn't be in the NBA HoF is like saying Keyshawn Johnson shouldn't be in the NFL HoF.
