Also from today's game. Bottom of the 9th Cubs down 3-2. 1st and 2nd no out, Soriano at the plate, Ryan Theriot on deck, D. Lee in the hole. Pinella does not have Soriano sac bunt.

Down by 1 in the Bot of the 9th you'd rather have:

-1st and 2nd no out with Soriano, Theriot, Lee due up

over

-2nd and 3rd 1 out with Theriot, Lee, Ramirez due up?

Either way seems fine.

Dosen't quite fit this thread, but I love the fact that Lou Pinella has no problem sacrificing his defense to tie the game/take the lead.

Pinella just PH for SS Cesar Izturis in the bottom of the 9th down 1. If the Cubs have to take the field again, either Alfonoso Soriano, Jason Marquis or Matt Murton will have to play the infield.

Their was an extra inning game a few weeks ago that Marquis pinch ran when the Cubs were out of hitters. Pinella said after the game Marquis would've stayed in to play first base if they tied the game.

[/ QUOTE ]

These guys are major league ballplayers. Im sure they have played some infield in their day. The risk/reward of a better hitter at the plate in exchange for an inferior defensive player in the field for a single inning is well worth it imo.

LOL Ironyments

Assuming the sac bunt is successful 100% of the time, it's probably a coinflip.

Of course this is Soriano though; He would probably foul 2 bunts off and then strike out.

a successful bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd increases run expectancy by 1/10 of a run, but thats not what you paid soriano to do. a single by any of the 3 guys scores the run.
