We also added extensive blocking and redirection training. [/ QUOTE ] You mean like in Back to the Future when Marty McFly would redirect Biff with the "What the hell is that" line, and Biff would look, only to have marty shoulder block him into his group of Cronies? |

[/ QUOTE ] lol - awesome!! Not exactly. Blocking is meeting force head-on. Redirection pushes the force in a different direction. One of my favorite examples: some guy kicks at your head, you throw your arm up, hitting his foot even higher into the air. If normal physics still apply, he will most likely lose contact with the floor with his other foot, and land on his butt. Another example: some guy throws your typical big right hand haymaker. You step to your left, hit the back of his wrist with your left hand. At this point, his head is unprotected and you have a clear shot with your right hand. |

Re: Best fighting style for real-life situations
This thread is absolutely awesome. I would like to hear more, a lot more. Quirk, what would you advice to someone who wants to learn how to hold his ground (or kick someone's ass) to learn? Karate? Boxing? both? I'm too broke for both. Something else? I'd love a serious answer. I can't do Dai To Yu out here.

Re: Best fighting style for real-life situations
boxing is probably good enough. although, if you
start off fighting a boxer with a KITN, he'll instinctively drop his hands to protect himself, and then you have a clear shot at his head. as Bruce Lee once said, ( paraphrased ) "all these styles that teach fancy this wrist lock, fancy that judo throw are forgetting that a simple hard punch to the nose works just as well. Re: Best fighting style for real-life situations
The correct answer is modern MMA as a foundation, with all the necessary throat, eye, ear, groin stuff added.
You have to know the 'gimmicky' stuff, because they are like knockouts, you can get one in a flash and win the fight. But you also can't think that they are all you need to know, and a lot of martial arts waste WAYYYYYYYYY too much time with stupid 'i gouge your eyes, strike your throat and rip your ear off'. Sure, but have you ever actually done it to a resisting partner? That's what i thought. Train with modern MMA as your base, because you can simulate getting taken down, taking a guy down, choking, joint manipulation, striking, defending striking, etc. You can actually PROVE that you can do these things, and master them against resisting partners. Without this base you will be going for some longshot 'deadly' technique that you've never actually pulled off before (unless you regularly get into life-or-death street fights). After you are solidly skilled at MMA, consider learning eye gouging, fish hooking, finger manipulation, throat strikes, groin strikes, pressure points, etc. But these things on their own are more likely to get you killed than to save you. If you are looking for an individual art, Jiu jistu Boxing Muay Thai Wrestling Judo Are the basis of 99% of modern MMA. |

Re: Best fighting style for real-life situations
Poking someone in the eye or attacking their throat and eyes are not more likely to kill you than save you. And you do indeed get better at landing any kind of blow you practice. Let's not get carried away.
